Yes we do. It is basically the same as the US holiday of a feast to thank for the harvest. Since we are a bit more Northern, our harvest is a bit earlier.

The only differnece is that it doesn't kick off the Christmas shopping season biggrin.gif .

Oh, and Thank You Ieshwar cool.gif

Happy Thanksgiving eh! wub.gif

Don't eat too much now.

Being an American living in Canada, it seems to me that the holiday is treated more like just an excuse for a day off from work, not that I'm complaining about that! tongue.gif I definitely doesn't seem to be the huge family get together event like it is in the States. Of course that is probably due to the fact it is on a Monday instead of the kick-off of a 4 day weekend like the US. There isn't the time available for travelling.

I hope everyone here in the Great soon to be White North enjoyed the day.
Conner
You're right on with your observation, Tony. Thanksgiving here is no where near the shindig it is in the US.

It's October's holiday. tongue.gif

Families do celebrate it but it's just low key....like everything else Canadian. laugh.gif

Well my house is slowly filling up with smoke as I cook my turkey in a little over an hour (don't ask, or I'll be forced to tell. But it does work really well tongue.gif ).

So wanted to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians out there. Hopefully you all have some time off and able to celebrate everything that we have to be thankful for.

Enjoy!!

Yep, Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Canucks. Hope you all enjoyed the Monday off of work as much as I did.

@TonyM, I think it varies, how much people celebrate Thanksgiving here. You're right in that it doesn't seem to be the hoopla that it is in the States, for most people. But it really depends on the family. Mine, for instance, never really celebrates it at all; we're generally holidayed-out by this point, thanks to the string of Jewish holidays that fall around this time of year. But I have friends whose families do the whole Turkey, family and football thing. And then there are those who take the opportunity for a weekend out of town while the weather's still nice. So, yeah, it varies.

However you celebrated, hope you enjoyed it! And don't forget to vote tomorrow!

To me it's just a day off.

It seems no one really celebrate it here in this province compared to the hypes I heard from people living in other provinces.

I just slept all morning and then went to the café all day as usual on my day offs.

Anyways...

It's turkey time already!!! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I'm not Canadian. Can I still use this as an excuse to eat too much turkey?

Happy Thanksgiving Day (Days !) to all smile.gif .
We had allready our TD last month, even both, we have a swiss one and a genevan one.

The "Jeûne genevois" (Genevan fast, its the official name of our first Thanksgiving day) is a public holiday in the canton of Geneva which occurs on the Thursday following the first Sunday of September. It has its origins in the 16th century. Legend connects the fast to the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, but this is almost certainly incorrect. In Geneva, a cradle of Protestantism and the Reformation, the news of this slaughter of several thousand Huguenots on 24 August 1572 did indeed trigger a fast in solidarity on 3 September 1572. However, the first fast in Geneva, which was widely participated in, dates from the beginning of October 1567, as a sign of solidarity with the Protestants being persecuted in Lyon, France, which is the most probable origin of the Jeûne genevois.

In 1831, the Swiss Federal Diet decreed a "Jeûne fédéral" for all cantons, fixing the date at 8 September. This was later changed to the third Sunday in September over the protests of Geneva, which enacted its own Jeûne genevois.

In 1869, Geneva repealed the officialization act, and Jeûne genevois was celebrated unofficially until 1965, gradually losing its religious significance. On 1 August 1966, it was again declared a public holiday, and the date fixed as the Thursday following the first Sunday of September, which it still is today.
Today, nobody is fasting any more, the national meal is made of a prune tart, eaten warm or cold, with a lot of cream and suger. And our chance here in Geneva, we can celebrate twice in the same month !
