Full Version: RESOLVED: I'm getting multiple e-mail notices per topic

QUOTE
There may be more replies to this topic, but only 1 email is sent per board visit for each subscribed topic. This is to limit the amount of mail that is sent to your inbox.

The above quote is from the e-mail notice that's sent out when someone has replied to a topic I'm subscribed to. However it doesn't seem to be working that way.

For example, I wake up each morning to a separate e-mail for each reply in every topic that I'm subscribed to. The same thing continues to happen all day long whether I'm on the site or not. In otherwords, I always get an e-mail notice of every single reply to every single topic I'm subscribed to.

Am I doing something wrong -- again -- or is this a possible bug?

Regards,
~gary.

That's means there's only one email per reply I assume. If you subscribe to a topic and check this option:

"Immediate Email Notification: This option will send out a notification immediately after a new topic or reply has been made regardless of your activity."

Then it will send you an email after each reply.

Hi Joe. I am once again very confused. That appears to be the norm for me. Although it is frustrating because as a software developer for 30+ years you'd think I'd have an easier time of this! smile.gif

If that's your assumption then how does the, "This is to limit the amount of mail that is sent to your inbox" comment in the e-mail itself help to limit the amount of mail that is sent to my inbox? And how does it jibe with the comment that, "There may be more replies to this topic, but only 1 email is sent per board visit for each subscribed topic."? It doesn't say reply, it says topic.

I can't find this option anywhere. Please direct me to the proper URL. Thanks.

The option is there when you make the subscription.

Go to My Controls and in the left hand panel, there is a "Subscriptions" section. Have a look at the topics/forums you're subscribed to. I'm only personally subscribed to forums, and when I look at "View Forums", underneath the forum it tells me what type of subscription I've got. If you want to change it, I suggest deleting your subscription and creating a new one -- making sure you select the type of subscription you want to use. I'm using "Delayed Email Notification" which won't send me an email if I'm logged in at the time.

Thanks, Graeme. That makes sense to me.

One more question please. If I subscribe to a forum instead of a topic will I:

1) only get notifications from topics I've started or replied to in that forum, or
2) will I get a notice every time someone creates a new topic or reply in that forum?

Based upon my subscription to this forum it appears #1 is what will happen. It's the only forum I am subscribed to whereas I am subscribed to scores of topics in multiple forums.

Thanks,
~gary.

Apparently option #1 is not what happens cause I'm getting notices of every new topic posted in The Lounge, which I subscribed to after my last reply. So I guess I'll just continue to subscribe to topics and learn to live with the bugs.

I beg to differ... I have been using Immediate Subscription for over a year and it only sends me one e-mail per board visit

That means if I am logged out of GA, I will get the mail citing the person who posted right after I logged out. After that, no mails.

But if I am logged into GA, I will get mails for each reply made. smile.gif

I have no doubt that's the case for you BK. However it's not the case for me. To me, as a software developer, that suggests either a problem with my browser and how it handles sessions, or the website software and how it handles sessions. Either way it appears that when I close the tab to GA the session is maintained for a very long time since I continue to get multiple e-mails per reply in each forum when I'm sleeping. And when you do the same thing the site behaves as it should.

As I stated before I can live with the current state of affairs. I've got other things I'd rather focus my attentions on. Like finding time to finally read A&O! smile.gif

Oooh! Can't wait to read your comments!! smile.gif

Are you sure you're logging out when you close the tab. 'cause if you're using Firefox, it doesn't log you out on just closing the tab... unsure.gif

No, I am not explicitly logging out. I'm just closing the tab. Still, my session should timeout with 20 minutes or so of inactivity. Maybe the software isn't using and end of session event in this situation.

I still haven't started A&O. I had intended to do so this morning however the needs of a friend were more pressing so I spent several hours on MSN. I did read your story about Typsy and gave it a good review. I have nothing pending that's pressing so I will find time to start A&O today. I promise.

Then I suggest you log out manually. smile.gif

I did read the comments on Man's Best Friend. Thank you.

I'm too lazy to login manually each time. Even though Fx remembers my login info. I can live with the current system.

Man's Best Friend was short but so wonderful. Again, I love it when an author experiments with atypical approaches to stories. It takes courage. You pulled this one off brilliantly.
