Simple question: are you happy with your job? Do you want to change? Can you see yourself doing it for the rest of your life? How important is your job to you anyway? (ie: if you teach, do you think of yourself as a teacher...?)

I'm a student, so I don't really have a job yet. But my line of study is science and engineering, and although I neither have the right nor the inclination to consider myself fully an engineer... I am, as of now, pretty happy with my line of study. I do believe in what I'm studying, and as much as I love writing, I'm glad that I'm not majoring in that. Although, if life as an engineer consists of problem sets, I'm getting off at the next station. biggrin.gif

PS How do you make a poll.....?

I hate my present job with a fiery passion, hence why I applied for a new one yesterday. I'm double majoring in Physics and Engineering and I'm pretty happy so far. I really don't give a shit about the Physics degree, it's just a resume booster really. I want the engineering degree because I REALLY want to get into alternative energy research and the engineering degree is a significant stepping stone to that.

I don't really care for my job. I'm mostly a student, but I work as a TA for two classes, and I hate stupid people. None of the smart ones come to me, just the dumb ones. Gah. But alas, the pay is decent and I don't have much of a choice. I enjoy my schoolwork though. And I get to be Dr. Menzo by age 23, so yay.

I recently got promoted to a Manager position at Express, and so far I like it. There's a lot of responsibilities that I recently acquired, and sometimes I can't believe I actually put up with such stupid customers that have no shame, but eh. It's challenging, it brings out the competitive side in me, and the perks are fun. It's definitely not something I'm going to do for the rest of my life, but while I'm a student, it's a good part-time job. It's definitely made me a much more social person, and it's helped me mature. I take my job very seriously, and will not have anyone questioning my work ethic, but that's true of school and anything else really.

As for my major, I'm seriously considering switching over to Criminology/Law & Society. I just don't think I have the passion to be a premed major. I may double major and then see which one calls out to me more, but either way, I'll either be going to Law School or Med School. smile.gif

LOL, interestingly enough I am a teacher. Well sorta. I'm subbing. I actually love it, I really like children, I love that I go to a completely different school, grade, and subject everyday. I just walk away at the end of the day and I don't really have to do any prep or make plans for the next day, and best of all I can have absolutely any day off without any notice (I'm only required to take 4 assignments a month, I usually take 4 or 5 a week, but in any case all I do is not answer the phone if I don't want to work).

It's most definitely not what I want to do long-term though. To be honest at this point in my life I'm completely chillin' and bumming around. My number one priority is just to have fun and enjoy this stage of my life. I'm enjoying my job though and I am considering getting certified and maybe teaching full time for a bit. The pay would be better and eventually I might like a tad more stability with where I'm going and what I'm doing. For example the hardest part right now is when I leave for the day and realize that chances are I'll never see the same kids again. Even if/when I do start doing it full time though even that would be pretty transitory. In about 6 months to a year (maybe two) I plan to go back to school and start work on my Master's of Social Work. While I'm doing it, and if I can set up my schedule properly I'll continue to teach. If not I'll look for something else.

Once I'm done with my degree I'm going to move into my actual *gasp* career and do counseling. I'm actually planning to more than likely specialize in GLBT issues. I'll probably also begin volunteering for support hotlines soon. Still, my goal is simply to have my Master's and get started by the time I'm 30. The next several years are just for me, and I'll pretty much do anything that strikes my fancy.

When you create a new topic, right below "topic description" and above the regular text book there's a clickable hyperlink that says "Click here to manage this topic's poll". Just click it and go through the steps to set up your poll. I'll start this one for you with "Yes, very much","Yes, mostly", "No, but I don't hate it", "No, I hate it", and "Not applicable/other". If you want to change it I *think* you can by editing your original post in this thread, but you may not be able to since I'm going to get it started for you (you would normally definitely be able to do that). If you can't and you want to change it just let me know smile.gif

And I get to be Dr. Menzo by age 23, so yay.

That's pretty nifty! I definitely plan on getting my PhD eventually too, but my only real goal on that one is doing it by the time I'm about 35. I know I could have taken things much more quickly, but I figure I'm personally a lot more likely to look back on my life later and say "Boy, I wish I'd gone out with my friends more" or "Gee, it woulda been cool to do X when I was younger" than I am to say "Man, I wish I had finished my degree sooner" or "If only I'd begun my career sooner".

I'm certainly not trying to convince other people to do that at all! It's just what I think is best for me.

Good topic, Corvus!

Take care and have an awesome day all biggrin.gif

An extremely timely question biggrin.gif Currently, I'm happy with the job, but not happy with the new manager I've got -- to the extent that I'm seriously considering changing. My options are to transfer within the company (my preferred option), but if I have to quit, I've already started looking at what my options are. My wife thinks she can get me a job with her company (as her boss, actually -- which is where we met, but that's another story). I also suspect I could survive contracting to my existing customers.

I don't want to make any decisions now, though, because I've got a months leave coming up. I don't want to do something now that's really just due to me needing a holiday....

Very wise, and besides you'd might as well enjoy the holiday you've earned without this being a concern that would interfere smile.gif

Good luck!

My answer was : yes, very much ! because my age. I'm retired, but still working for 2 reasons :
1. I dont know what to do else tongue.gif,
2. It's nice to be able to get a little more in the purse, just to pay my monthly need of pipe tobacco laugh.gif

In different times in the past, I would have to vote any of the other positions, but fortunately its past cool.gif

Totally blissful!

I get to to do what I want when I want: no one to answer to, no schedule, mix work and play (it's all play to me, as in nothing I do for 'work' is a chore), mess around with my eco-house and off-grid energy projects, and most importantly, socialise whenever too smile.gif

Of course the dumb ones come to you! lol...they're the ones that need the help. The smart ones just do the work on their own, no problem. But hey, if anything, you can get some laughs out of those stupid people. Btw, you remind me of my sister- she says that all the time.

That's a great attitude, and one that everyone should have. Having time for yourself or enjoying a specific time in your life is important, especially before you head off into a new chapter of your life (higher education, new job, etc). I would love to chill around after graduation, but I'm lucky to get a five, maybe six month window of 'me' time. Parents are looming over me- lecturing, blahhh... wacko.gif

Lucky, lucky.

Jealous, jealous.

Well, if you can achieve that level of happiness with your work/career, more power to you. We should all strive for that, but it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes you just gotta pay the rent/bills.

cool.gif ......Interesting question, the 1st 16 years at my work I was extremely happy with my job, however the last four years, well it's a job. The reason? Management has made extreme changes resulting in:

Highest turnover rate of any other department, city, county & State

I hate my job. Every day I go in I want to leave as soon as I punch in.
No, wait, as soon as I put on my uniform at home I want the night to be over.
I'm a manager at McDonald's. Just to get myself through school. I would never work at McDonads for life. I'd sooner join the Army. (Which I have been considering)
But truthfully, when my boss is that stupid and they just keep dumping new responsibilities on me with no additional pay. I mean, this guy is really dense.
Not to mention I've been threatened several times recently by outraged customers. One actually sat across the street and watched the store for hours after the police made him leave the store.
Oh, and when I got robbed at gunpoint all they (store manager and area supervisor) could say was "You did the right thing."

I do not mean to rant, but I really hate my job...

I've recently quit my part-time job. Makes paying credit card bills a bit tougher, but I hated it so much. At first, it was great- good pay, nice, fun coworkers, but then everyone started leaving and they've hired new people who don't help out, and they've changed things around. I had to leave. I'd wake up, hoping the day would fast forward.

You got threatened?! Holy mother, it's just a food joint; customers should not be that stressed out or plain crazy! Order their food and bounce. What else is there? Hopefully you'll get the Express job. Discounted clothing! Or if not that one, a new job, anything but that Mcdonalds where your life seems endangered!

I had it worse; my brain does not function on a scientific or mathematical level, whatsoever! It just shuts down. I think my Chem prof. in high school felt sorry for me and curved my grades/passed me. Not a shining moment in my life.

Mostly, I love it. I'm an Educational Assistant Substitute at an elementary school. I only work at the one small school, so I know nearly all the kids and faculty. It has a great family feel to it. Some days are bad, but mostly I enjoy it.

Strangely enough, if I had to describe myself, I'd say I was a writer, and throw in the EAS as an afterthought. I love my job, especially because it leaves me a lot of time to write, but all things being equal, if I had to choose, I would be a writer.

Chemistry was actually my most difficult subject too. I actually finished up with an "A" in it, and I really didn't do that much work for it outside the classroom, but boy did I work my butt off in the classroom to get it!

Never being one to be silent when I need assistance or have questions, it got to the point that one day in class after my teacher had finished explaining a new concept and was still facing the board, she said, "Yes, Kevin?" as she slowly turned around to discover that I did indeed have a question laugh.gif

I know what you mean. For all the science and math I do, a description of myself would be incomplete without fixing "writer" somewhere in it -- and a writer of fiction. Not to be confused with problem set answers and lab reports... ph34r.gif

LOL, I confess in some regards it's mostly a matter of being lazy. I probably could have figured out a great deal of it on my own, but I expect it to just "snap", and I rather someone keep explaining it to me until it does laugh.gif

I also have what I suppose is the sort of bad attitude that school work should interfere as little as possible with outside activities, so I worked very hard to make sure I understood something while I was there because I knew I probably wouldn't give it another thought once I left blush1.gif

As a budding engineer, I have a philosophy. I don't care how the equation came to be, just give it to me! As long as I can derive acceleration from velocity and velocity from position, I'm good on kinematics!

What was the point of this thread, again? Oh right, jobs, lmao.

Well, my Chemistry teacher is like a child. She likes to make faces a lot!!! And once, she literally cried when a student was rude to her. That said, she always makes that scornful face whenever I raise my hand and she goes like, "Yes, Bikram?"

I have a degree in teaching and worked as a teacher up until a year ago, but while I was doing it (for 7 -- 9 years or so, depending on how you count) I'd have hated to call myself a teacher. I never wanted to be a teacher, I only did it because it seemed like the only option at the time, as I had a degree in languages and jobs as translators didn't come along that often, and weren't well-paid (or so I thought).

Now I am a translator, and the pay is far better than for teachers while the job isn't anywhere near as stressful. Teaching is extremely draining emotionally, at least if you're teaching kids -- you need to have a dialogue with maybe 70 or more of them during one school day, as well as inspire them as a group and possibly break up fights between people bigger and stronger than yourself in the corridors or schoolyard. I admire those who do it their whole lives and somehow get through it with their sanity intact, especially since it's actually an extremely important job.

Interestingly, now that I'm not doing it anymore it happens that I think of myself as a teacher, and I've realised that I probably did a better job at it than I thought at the time. I'd never want to go back to teaching, however -- but at the same time I wouldn't call myself a translator either... so I guess I'll have to switch to something else again soon. biggrin.gif Happy days!

There's nothing worse for job satisfaction than feeling like you're too good for your job. I say this as someone who has felt that way and left as a result.

With my current job I know that I could do better and find a higher paying job if I were willing to do more work and put in more time, but I also know that I'm overpaid for the actual work and time that I put in for this job. I think that's one of the biggest contributers to my being satisfied and happy with it.
