Full Version: RESOLVED: New format for story pages?

I might be confused again. That certainly would come as no surprise to anyone here.

It seems like the format for all the story pages except Hosted Authors changed in the last few hours.

It used to be when I'd click on a story, let's take Mike and Winston as an example, I'd be taken to the page with Chapter 1 on it.

Now I'm seeing a page with a very detailed summary of the story and then links to each chapter including the author's summary of each chapter.

Am I nuts? Wait. Don't answer that. Just tell me if what I'm seeing is intentional and permanent. smile.gif

Hey gary, I think it may be something on your end. I just tried clicking Mike and Winstone for the main efiction page and it took me to Chapter 1. is there anyway you are clicking on table of contents?
BeaStKid
working quite fine for me...
GaryK
Sheesh, even the e-mail notifications are running (sometimes hours) behind schedule or else I would have been here sooner.

BK and SG. I clicked on the banner in your signatures. It took me to the type of page I described. Give me a few minutes and I'll capture screenshots of what I see when I click on those banners, links, bookmarks, and everything else.

It worked fine last night when I read Mike and Winston around 4-5 AM. I haven't changed anything in my browser. I'm a web developer amongst other things so I know the ins and outs of almost every browser that's available. Just check my home page and you'll see how seriously geeky I am about browsers.

Be back in a few minutes with screen captures.
GaryK
Since it all works the same way for me I just did screen captures for A&O.

Up until early this morning in the US here's what I used to see when I clicked the banner in your signature, BK:

Starting around noon in the US this is what I see when I click on the same banner:

About the subscriptions, I agree. they are giving problems and running a few hours behind...

E-Fiction is running fine for me, otherwise...

At least I'm not alone with the e-mail problems. It's weird but it makes me feel a little better. wink.gif

So you're telling me when you click on your banner you see the first image I posted?
GaryK
BK, I just got the e-mail notice of your reply!!!

Im guessing you are logged in on eFiction?

The reason I guess that is because when I was not logged it went right to the chapter, now that I have logged into eFiction its taking me to the second screen shot.

I logged back out and it went back to chapter one instead of the "table of contents" page.

*:SOLUTION:*

Okay... when logged in go to Account info. then click on Edit preferences. You will see the following option:

Display table of contents for stories.

un-check the box and hit Submit

Should fix you right up. if you are logged in or not smile.gif

Thank you. I had never used that section until today but that box was ticked. Unticked it and now everything works like it used to. BTW, I have always been logged in. Had a chat today with someone who acknowledged problems with eFiction software.

The eFiction software has known issues. Mostly with the login. This was the first I've heard of this problem though. Why it chose today to play this, I dunno. Just glad to get it sorted out best I can. smile.gif

eFiction is rather wonky as a software. However, it is the best that I can get for free. We'll have to live with it until money starts growing on trees or until some new projects start paying off.

frankly, I am quite happy with it.... took some time getting used to, but its fine just the way it is...quite user-friendly...
GaryK
I have to disagree about it being user-friendly. As a software developer of many decades I know user-friendly software when I see it and this isn't it.

I must emphasize though that what Myr commented on is something we must keep in mind. It's free software and we need to live with it until the chance for something better comes along.

As long as I can continue to read the good stories that are available in eFiction it seems like an easy task to tolerate the wonky software.

I just need to occasionally ask some questions to be sure the problems I'm having are with the software and not with me. Even after 51 years I still have not been fully debugged, and I was not built to any sort of standard to begin with. wink.gif

What's wrong with seeing a table of contents page? I thought that was a nice improvement...

Despite its flaws you have managed to point out one of the nicer things about the eFiction software. We can each configure things to suit our preferences. smile.gif
