I think schools all over the country need to have similar policies. There's no reason why teens should have to live in fear simply because they are gay. I wonder if part of the problem is the fact that some parents teach their children hate. Another factor may be school administrators who are indifferent or even antagonistic towards GLBT students. Hopefully, more teens will fight for policies like this one. I'm all for it!

I'm a bit sick of my school, I tried organizing a GSA and i was pushed back for it. and me and my other gay friends at school continuosly get called things like 'fag' and 'queer'.
Hell, when i report the days that we get things like apple core's/whole apples. rocks, and rubbish. thrown at us nothing happens.

It even got to the point where a friends ribs got broken by them and they still did nothing. I considered leaving school. but I'm not going to let them force me out of school because of fear.

Next step is to take the same action that these people have done. 2handed.gif

Matt, that's terrible. Maybe you should consider taking some self-defense classes. That way you can protect yourself if ever there is a problem. It's always a last resort, but it's definitely a viable option.

I hope everything works out for you, Matt. I would hate to see you or anyone for that matter, get hurt...

Thanks, this will sound bad, but i'm sort of used to it. And i can't help thinking that no one should have to get used to that....

If it were me, the next step I would take would be legal action. You and your friends' physical well-being is threatened and your school administrators don't care, so the only thing that would get through to them at this point is to take them to court. Their obligation is to ensure your safety and they're refusing to fulfill that obligation. If that didn't work out then I would get clear evidence that the kids are doing this and then get the police involved, perhaps have your parents threaten theirs.

You probably would not need to do anything past the threats since legal action is enough to spook many people into doing what they're supposed to do, or stop what they're doing.

Are there any hate crime laws in your area? That would be good leverage, but the assault and battery from things being thrown at you would be enough.

Oh dear! How awful hug.gif

But please, do not strike back with physical retaliation. Protect yourself yes, but don't unduly escalate the situation. That could easily result in you and your friends being hurt worse and if the school and authorities are prejudiced and biased it opens you up to to getting in trouble and being unfairly treated. Remember if they're already ignoring all this there's every reason to believe that they might decided to engage their selective attention only far enough to notice you and your friends striking back.

So be careful and protect yourself, but please don't resort to violence or do anything which might get you into a worse situation.

I support Robbie's suggestion! I don't know what the laws are like there, but if you can, use them to your advantage.

Take care, Matty and be as cautious and safe as possible,

Wow, looking at your profile and being a fellow Australia, it's disheartening to see that there is that form of discrtimination. Going to a male single sex school, we're very tolerent of gays. While we don't have a GSA club per se, myself and every other straight guy treat gays the same way, no bullying or discrimination. Just stick it out Matt, there is 'light at the end of the tunnel'. Sorry for the cliched phrase, but, yeah. Good luck.

I'm glad you're taking self-defense. Just remember what Kevin said. Don't make it physical unless one of them attacks you first. There are two main reasons for this. First, while their actions are wrong, it would be just as wrong for you to answer with violence. Second, martial arts makes you a weapon. In some countries (and I cannot speak for Australia) you can be charged with assault with a deadly weapon if you use your skills as a martial artist to inflict injury upon another person without just cause. Thus, the penalty can be more severe.

Welcome to Gay Authors, dude!

It's great to have you and it's great to hear how much better things are at other schools. I certainly hope this trend does continue.

Take care,
