Maybe I'm odd and rambling when I say this but anyone else feel the poignancy of bagpipes
the agony they express... It just says give up hope and that their is so much hurt in this world
Just my observation... I listen to too many bagpipe performances i guess

When I was in intermediate school we had a neighbor who couldn't play the bagpipes. Trouble is, he kept trying. Now, that's probably a good thing, but he'd do it in his back yard early on weekend mornings. I'd rather listen to the roar of lawnmowers and leaf blowers than his attempts to learn to play the bagpipes. Thank god they moved about five years ago. Anyway, as a result, every time I hear bagpipes playing I just want to get away from the sound. That's probably too bad, and I should give them a chance, but they cause such a reaction in me. Not like your reaction, not the poignancy part but absolutely the agony part.

The agony is not in the ears that hear my friend
it is in the pain of the sound the finality... the hope being snuffed out

It depends upon the song. Bagpipes are definitely poignant in "Amazing Grace", but that is not the case with "Scotland The Brave". smile.gif

Which metaphor do you prefer? Nails-on-a-chalkboard? Or cats-being-strangled?

I love Irish and Scottish folk music, but I can't stand bagpipes. *Shudder*.

I love Irish and Scottish folk music as well. However, I love bagpipes. smile.gif

I don't have a very strong reaction to bagpipes either way, although I agree that they're an odd instrument and definitely a hit or miss sort of situation.

And Colin: Awwwww hug.gif That sounds horrible!

To me bagpipes are one of two things. One, I always think of them when they are being used in a St. Patricks day parade, and the other is at a funeral. In my way, I always think of the first one because I always see them more there then anywhere else.

Also: I picked what in the name cus i'm kinda mixed on the topic smile.gif

Pagpipes remembers me my first holidays in Scotland. It was in Edinburgh in Summer 1946. I belonged to a mixte scout group (guys and girls in age from 16 to 21) and we were invited to an international Folkdance Festival. I had a crush on a guy and a girl, but the girl was easier to approach laugh.gif .
As usual it was rainy and since when I'm listening to pagpipes, I always feel the rain, the fog and the smell of smoke and humid earth. and I like because the memories it evoke.
I also follow each year on TV the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an annual Military tattoo given by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and International military bands and display teams in the Scottish capital Edinburgh.
Bagpipes play an important part in this Festival.
Its why I like pagpipes'marchs.
