For those that don't want to watch the whole video, John McCain in responding about the Georgian Conflict says:

"In the 21st Century Nation's don't invade other nations."

I could have sworn that just the other day John McCain was supporting the invasion of Iraq by the United States...

Yup, kind of funny. Political faux pas or a calculated maneuver is still up for grabs. If I were a spin doctor right now, I would offer him a choice as to go away from the subject or launch a new campaign denouncing and distancing himself from the unpopular president, highly unlikely as he needs hard line Republican support for win.

Missteps like these tend to cost candidates elections. They often fail to be consistent in what they say. He most likely would go on to make up some excuse as to why Iraq is different. This is common doublespeak for politicians in general. They like to appease the audience of the moment even if it is hypocritical.

It just keeps getting deeper and deeper with McCain:

Bottom line of the article, McCain announces today that he is sending two US Senators, both of whom are major supporters of his campaign to Georgia. Notice that: HE is sending them to Georgia. Last I heard, George W. Bush was President of the United States and Condi Rice was Secretary of State. What's the deal with a US Senator and Presidential Candidate sending his own delegation?

Obama was criticized for acting 'too Presidential' when he went to Germany and gave his big speech. Now McCain is sending his own foreign delegations?

"In the 21st Century Nation's don't invade other nations."

When the world is facing times of trouble, Father Johnny comes to thee,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in these hours of darkness he is standing right in front of thee,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

I think one of the key words left out is "democratic." A philosophical distinction of some importance between nation-states viewed as legitimate and those not seen as legitimate, where the illegitimate ones may be fair game, so to speak, to invade if they fail to cooperate in good faith with international agreements they have taken part of or are otherwise belligerent.

Then there's the implied matter of intention that is being utterly forgotten. Nations in the 21st century are not to invade other nations for the purpose of annexing territory. Did we annex Iraq and try to make it our own? No. Russia's intentions, while not 100% revealed, do not seem to involve leaving Georgia.

But hey, lets just make fun of a guy who failed to articulate the whole concept.

Purity of heart is hardly the motivation of the Russians (or the Georgians, either).

But it remains to be seen if Russian troops remain in the non-Ossetia parts of Georgia after the last American is out of Iraq.
