[Adam Phillips] Postscript to It Started With Brian

Recommended Posts

I've been very gratified that so many people continue to discover Sam's story and are touched by it. I keep getting emails asking the same sorts of questions about the "story behind the story," though, and since it's not my story, I never feel I have the right to answer them. I generally forward the emails to John (Sam's "Brian"). Occasionally he's posted to Sam's efiction forum answering these questions but obviously that thread gets buried and people don't see it.

He sent me this text last night and asked me to put it where I thought it would be most likely to be seen. I decided that it would make most sense to tag it to the end of his actual story. So here's the URL to what John had to say in response to the common questions he receives.

I cried my eyes out many many times over reading this story. I know Adam relates to it incredibly which is where the connection with Dan started in the first place.

Is this a new post script or are you just reminding people it is there?

Postscript from "Brian"

Trying to follow that link gets me a page that says "Access denied. This story has not been validated by the adminstrators of this site." Do you know if that is just a temporary artifact of the move to the new GA Stories software or is the content of the Postscript from "Brian" available anywhere else now?

Thanks so much

Some of the volunteers moved this story over to GA Stories in my behalf since I've been so busy...and I guess they didn't realize it had a Postscript, so it didn't get ported. I'll try to get on it quickly. I am a little concerned because I'm not sure I saved a copy....but it might be in my emailbox still...and it is probably still in John's. So we'll get it there. Just have a little patience.

A number of you who follow my story have also read "Dan Kincaid's" autobiographical It Started With Brian, and you're aware of my relationship to Sam (his real name) and my involvement in the writing of that story.

I wanted to let you know that Sam's man has asked me to post a sort of "final word" wherever I thought it might be appropriate, preferably in a place that wouldn't get "buried" like Sam's Forum might, since there's little reason for activity on it any more. He asked me to do this because he keeps getting the same questions from people over and over (via Sam's old email account), and he wanted to speak to some of them for once and all.

Cia graciously consented to add this text to ISWB in the form of a Postscript; it appears essentially as the final chapter of ISWB in G.A. Stories.

I just thought I'd give you all a heads-up in case you were interested in what "Brian" had to say about it all. Here's the link:

Any luck finding the postscript yet?

Thanks!

Doug,

Adam had this link posted elsewhere, and while I don't know if this is the re-posted copy of the postscript or not, it does work, or did when I found it a few moments ago.

Postscript to ISWB

That works! Thanks so much for pointing that out.

How beautiful. How absolutely beautiful of a story. I can relate to some of this due to physical/emotional/mental/spiritual violence I've had in my lifetime. It was so wonderful, but so frustrating to see so much love and yet not be able to express that love for so long between these two men. It took be about a day and 1/2 to go through this whole story since I could not stop once I started. Brian - I also believe it does not matter what your orientation is LOVE is what matters. You both lived it...too short...but a lifetime...warmth and hugs to all. J.D.

I read It Started With Brian a few weeks ago and fell in love with it. Having been a fan of Crosscurrents, both stories seem very similar but totally different. I'm saddened by the authors passing but am wholly glad that you took the reigns and finished it for him. It speaks volumes to your character!

Edit: I read the postscript while listening to Sara Bareilles "Gravity" and want to cry my eyes out. >.>

That said, I'm really, really, really happy that you're writing more chapters for Crosscurrents.

I'm not sure if here's the right place to write something or to it elsewhere, but I just finished ISWB and wanted to tell how much I loved it. It's an intense story and I was soooo happy when Brian and Sam finally worked out everything and got together. The Postscript though - that's when I lost it and almost bawled my eyes out. Somehow it totally eluded me that this story was autobiographical and when realization set it ... well, I needed a lot of Kleenex, that's for sure. I just hope with all my heart that Brian/John and Sam could enjoy the time they had and that John and their son are doing ok these days.

They're doing fine, Moonie. I texted with "Brian" a bit just last week. We don't talk as much as we used to, but we do keep in touch. Sam's son has turned out to be an exceptional young man, like his father. And John ("Brian's" real name...he's used it himself at this forum, so I'm not giving anything away) is doing just fine.

Good day sir, I am James from the Philippines!

For 2 years, I never, ever stop finding a way how can I reach you or how can I message you to say how much I appreciated your story "It started with Brian".

It was a heartbreaking story, full of intense drama and a heartwarming romance between Sam and Brian. To be honest, it made me depressed, thinking what if that thing happened to me? will I also do what Sam did? or just let myself off and get with Brian easily..

there are moments that I hate Sam, loved him, pity him, amd adore him for some choices he made for his life.. some were very foolish, others are good.. but whatever they are.. I know there is ALWAYS a reason why Sam did that..

When I read the first chapters of your story ( chapters 1-7 ) I said to myself "oh, it was like another m2m lovestory I read overand over again in the internet" but when I read the chapter where hell breaks loose ( the moment that sam and brian fight, sam said that he loved brian and the bitch Amy heard that, tell the whole town and his parents about this) I started getting excited. and that excitement grows as I turn the page into the next chapter..

I really admire Sam.. for me, he was a literary extraordinaire person, he was not afraid to show who he was, or what he wants.. he always see things very positive although his life ( or some points in his life) os miserable..

when chapter 20 came up, I said to myself "Geez, I gotta see him in person! I dont care if I will spend thousand of bucks to get to US! just to have his signature! " lol

but eventually, I also learned he passed away before the story finished. and that broke my heart.

for two years, I am always finding a way how could I reach you sir! I did never stop! unfortunately, here in our country there are limited access site on internet.. that's why its hard for me to join on this forums at first. But it doesn't stop me to try again.

I copy the story to my wordpad and let my friends read it, and they were also amazed. they keep on asking where did I got this story but I did not tell.. well, I want them to discover it on their own..

Thank you sir! a million thanks to this story.. I have read some of the greatest works like "Dessert Dropping" or "Stronger than Lions" but this "ISWB" is a million mile greater than them. I guess becoz it was an autobiographical that's why it really hooked me..

no further words to say becoz I think i really consume much of your time.. thank you again Mr. Phillips

PS

how old now is the real brian and sam's son?

Thanks for the kid words about It Started With Brian. I hope people continue to read the story. John sort of wanted it to sink below visibility as time went by, and I understand how he wanted to protect the anonymity of Sam's survivors, but I think it's a great love story, and I'm gratified people are still reading it.

I havent texted or communicated with John in a long, long time. I believe Sam's son has now graduated from high school, but I'll make a point of trying to touch base with John before long.
