*Sneak Peek* Promptly Oliver!

Recommended Posts

The creative writing group I belong to has been looking for some new ways to come up with sources of inspiration for stories.

One idea we have come up with, and one that we are the process of writing at the moment, is to use the titles of all of the songs (in the order they are sung) from a single musical as chapter titles.  As the musically inclined amongst you can probably gather from the title, I have chosen the score from Lionel Bart's Oliver!.

The plan is to write a story (might be a novella if I can pull it off) of 13 chapters (the film version only contained 13 songs, as a few from the stage version were dropped).  The song titles that will be the prompt for each chapter are:

Chapter 1: Food, Glorious Food

Chapter 2: Oliver!

Chapter 3: Boy for Sale

Chapter 4: Where is Love?

Chapter 5: Consider Yourself

Chapter 6: You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two

Chapter 7: It’s a Fine Life

Chapter 8: I’d Do Anything

Chapter 9: Be Back Soon

Chapter 10: Who Will Buy?

Chapter 11: As Long As He Needs Me

Chapter 12: Reviewing the Situation

Chapter 13: Oom-Pah-Pah

The only rules that we have set is that the story cannot be in any way related to the film whose score we are using, and that each chapter must be at least 1000 words long.  So, for my story, that means it can't be about an orphan boy who runs away to London and joins a group of pickpockets.

When I'm finished I'll start posting the story here.  Though god knows what I'm going to do for "Oom-Pah-Pah" (answers on a postcard please :P )

Here's a sneak peak from chapter 2: Oliver! (only because chapter 1 is in such a mess right now :gikkle: ):

I sat on my bed and stared out of the window.  Why the hell did I allow what happened at school this afternoon to occur?

I’d made it to the age of fourteen without allowing my heart to overrule my head!  I’d made it to the age of fourteen with my closest guarded secret intact!  Now it’s all going to come out.

Dear Jesus sweet Christ, it’s all going to come out.

He’s just so cute . . . and we were laughing and joking as we usually do . . . and the urge finally became irresistible.

I actually did it!

I can’t believe I kissed him!

In public!

In full view of half the school!

I’d been attracted to Oliver since we both started Maddisson Secondary School.  Hell, it was more than just an attraction; I lusted after him.  I thought about him day and night.

And oh god, those eyes!  Those grey eyes of his that were so full of life.  Little flecks of grey and blue and green that swam around his irises.  They were so alive.  I’ve never seen eyes that danced and sparkled with such life before.  Those eyes were the first thing of his that I saw three years ago, and it was those eyes that I fell hopelessly in love with.

I never planned to even ask him on a date let alone kiss him in full view of the school, yet I’ve wanted to throw him to the ground and ravish him since that first day of school.

I may seem like any other girl on the surface, but I’m not.  I knew I was different from the age of about six.   I can remember asking for my first Barbie, the look of sheer horror on my dad’s face and the look on Mum’s face, kind of sympathetic but not quite daring to challenge Dad.

At the age of seven, I started playing dress-up in Mum’s clothes.  It was around that time that Dad left us.  Mum kept on telling me that it wasn’t my fault and that the problem was Dad’s, but I knew deep down it was because of my behaviour that he left.

At age eight I got into Mum’s make up, and from there things really changed for me.  As much as Mum didn’t like it, hardly a day went by when I didn’t have on a dress or more make up than a hooker.

By age nine, Mum started buying me my own dresses.

You may wonder why my folks had a difficult time dealing with this.

The one small snag was that I was born a boy . . . a boy called Michael.

can't wait to for the chapter "You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two" :gikkle:

I've got a really off the wall idea for that one.  I may post a sneak peek once I have the bones of the chapter written.
