Urban Adventure Story! - a la Tales of the City

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

This is my urban adventure story - attempting to be something along the lines of a British Tales of the City (at least i'd like to think so).  It's a bit of a comedy, mystery, political, love story.  But urban adventure is probably how i'd describe it.  Set in Manchester, UK, 2009.

Would really love to know what you think of it, if you'd like to take a look!  I'm about two thirds of the way through and aiming to complete by Christmas.

Ok, the start was slow and it took me a while to get into the story. Now I'm hooked. Kind of like reading Tom Clancy, really slow in the beginning, but when the action starts, wow!

I'm looking forward to more of this story, and where the characters are going.

I was attracted by the title of this story immediately because several of the people I've liked from the UK (including my favorite teacher ever) have been from Manchester--including the midwife and the anesthesiologist at my youngest's birth, who started reminiscing across me, about happy former days at the Royal Free (?)

We've read the whole Tales of the City series and Lost in Manchester is definitely a bit like it, Stu, but I think it's rather more enjoyable because your approach is more focused and you haven't gotten carried away with picturesque charm... San Francisco writing can get a bit gloppy with it. I'm loving the slow revelations of the characters' history and issues.

The Royal Free Hospital is a London Hospital, which was located in Gray's Inn Road just outside the city.  It is now located in the north of london in newish buldings a stone throw away from Hampstead Heath It was one of the great medical schools of London.  It does still teach but so do all the others.

 I'm all mixed up... we rented a place across the street from the Royal Free this summer... and my caregivers when I was in labor had both been at the Royal Infirmary. I think. But I must admit I was pretty out of it by that point in the conversation.

I'm now rereading the story from the beginning to make sure I haven't missed anything. I thought there might've been a bit of a continuity issue? How long has Ciaron been gone?

Yep, Thomas is about 35.  Hitting that mid 30s age, when he doesn't want to be out partying and sleeping around any more, but he doesn't quite know what he should do next with his life, and he isn't dealing with it very well...
