'Strong Signal' stirs interest in hint for alien life

Unfortunately, the article isn't giving a lot of information, but it implies that they've picked up something at 11GHz, which they say is an odd frequency for an astronomically generated signal. However, the final statement indicates that at least one person thinks it may be local, not interstellar, and military in nature :)

SETI is also getting involved.

If this is it and these little green/gray aliens really are Type 2 Civilization, I wonder what is their power source?

Artificial Singularities would mean a mastery of gravity, space, and time so they wouldn't need conventional signals.

Anti-matter sounds cooler than practical applications, Anti-matter can't practically be created and annihilated at enough ratio to generate that much power for constant use based on our current manufacturing methods.

Controlled/Cold Fusion is fine, but you need a lot of reactors running at the same time for the same purposes; basically generating a mini-sun's worth of power in H-bombs. Way too dangerous for any safety conscious civilization that has passed a nuclear age of near Mutually Assured Destruction.

There's a theory that it may be possible to 'flip' matter into antimatter, and vice versa, though that requires a level of quantum mechanic control that's beyond our current capabilities. However, a Type 2 civilisation is supposed to be significantly beyond our own...

A directed signal is unlikely. Given that the star in question is 95 light years away, they would not be trying to signal us in response to our own radio broadcasts (that would required that we sent those signals at least 190 years ago for them to pick them up and them respond).

All in all, as stated in the article that W_L linked to, it's most likely the signal is of terrestrial origins. Which would be disappointing...

Still, we will never know the full truth

If this is really the message of an advanced alien Civilization, Governments would fear it's release due to the problems it could raise on social issues: i.e. many World religions may as well collapse or fear of invasion could spur rapid militarization for "love of Earth".

If this is an alien civilization at Type 2 level, I doubt they want to invade, most likely they just want to see if we're ready to join the galactic map destinations, like a truck stop on the way to Vegas :P They don't need to contact us for any reason except just to say hello like we are doing or just accidentally broadcasting interstellar news, or worst case scenario, they could be "Space Mormons" preaching about the Alien Savior and the "good Word" that Earth can be saved..

If not, 11 gigahertz is a weird and powerful broadcast, potentially we're talking sensitive government data from US, EU, Russia, or China being accidentally revealed or even the existence of such high powered equipment.

My reading of the articles is that the broadcast received was not powerful. The signal was only considered powerful if it was being powered from a source 95 light years away. If it were actually powered from a satellite orbiting the Earth, it wouldn't have been powerful at all.

I thought I read that 11 gigahertz is usually a Military broadcast for short burst transmissions in ultra-high frequency when it is terrestrial in origin.

How long did this signal last is a good question and if it starts up again, then get ready for this moment:

Classified communications is possible as well and more likely.
