Good idea, then we have a place to rant over Jason's stupid mother and fiancée. :pissed:

actually ex-fiancée, if you've read all 18 chapters :D

But Jason's dad is cool even if he should have been more supportive of his teen son. Then perhaps Jason wouldn't have made that initial disasterous mistake. :pinch:

I guess 18 chapters in is a little late, but I decided to start this in case readers had any questions.  And I'll share that my main inspiration for this story was Graeme's My Roommate's Gay.

I'm not sure how my story inspired this one (unless it's an attempt to avoid all the cliches I wrote about in that story), but I'm glad it did. I've just read the 18 chapters posted so far and I'm really enjoying it.

For those who haven't stumbled across it, here's the link: Mr. Brightside

One of the things I'm loving about the story are the characterisations. Even those that we originally think are stereotypes turn out to not be. I'm guessing that Denise and Jason's mother will turn out similarly. Well done! :worship:

It's a longish story, but here's my trying to shorten it:

I started to right (after being on a fiction writing hiatus since my teens) about 18 months ago, and I started with what is basically a rom com that I published on another site.  The story is not exactly earthy realism, but I tried hard to make it grounded in something recognizable as reality and to have the characters act in (mainly) rational ways.  I got bogged down writing it, and after reading some suggestions in the gay authors forum tried writing something else to break the block.

So I started another story about former college roommates in a similar  situation as Shane and Jason...friends, one turns out gay, the other is a homophobe who turns out to be secretly gay.  Only in the original version, their reunion happens 15 or 20 years in the future.  The problem was, in order to have it have any rationality, the Jason character would have to be incredibly messy, and Shane, if his character were well adjusted and rational (and I planned on the character being that way) would have said..."no hard feelings....now hit the road."

At this point, I read "My Roommate's Gay."  And I read one of the comments suggesting that you turn it into a multi-chapter story.  And I briefly thought of taking my roommate idea and doing a similar parody.  However, the other story that bogged me down was primarily a comedy, and I wanted to try something more serious.

That's when I thought....maybe as someone just starting out writing, instead of trying so hard to transcend the m/m tropes that are so popular, maybe I could just try to do a good version of it.  After all, one of my favorite movies is the original The Matrix.  And once you remove the great effects and visuals, it's a pretty standard plot:  the chosen one meets an older mentor who helps him unlock his potential and become The One;  along the way, romance blossoms.

So, that what I decided to do;  I'd try to include as many tropes as posssible:  college roommates, one "straight" and one gay, dramatic public outing, a horrific beating, a hospital stay, a coma, etc.  And then try to keep them from being too stale.

Hey when is chapter 19 dropping and is that the last chapter or the story keeps going ??? I really like this story

Hopefully chapter 19 will be up by Friday.  There will by at least 5 more chapters after 19, but the end is nearing.

Here's kind of who I based my characters' appearances on:

Jason:  Brandon Flowers (lead singer of The Killers), but without the guyliner

Shane:  Jude Law, especially in Gattaca

Viktor:  Eric Roberts, specifically the Mr. Brightside video

Great chapter, and I didn't even mind the cliff hanger. :)

thanks.  I think I read too much Nancy Drew growing up, so all of my chapters seem to end on cliff hangers.  and poor Shane seems to end up with as many concussions as Nancy.

Miss me some Jason & Shane...

No pressure, I definitely get it when things aren't flowing or life's too busy. Just take this as a compliment that I love your characters. :)

I am glad to here that.  I have started the next chapter (which is likely to be the last one plus an epilogue).  I have it about 30% written, and the rest is outlined, but a bout of writers block plus lots of work plus holiday hangover have me stymied.  but I am anxious to finish as I have a couple of other stories I'm anxious to develop.
