NEW
AUTHORS Gay Authors also would like to announce the newest Promising author, Faust, please take time to check out his work. Faust - Site ---------------------------------------- The anthology theme for Spring 2008 is Living in the Shadows. First of all, the choice of theme is spectacular. There are so many ways to interpret this theme, from stories about death or ones about teen prostitutes with their own personal struggles. One common thread was sadness. Yes, the shadows of depression can leave a person feeling completely hopeless and make living unbearable. This anthology has been the largest to date with a total of 25 authors! There are many returning favorites like our own Krista and BeaStKid as well as Altimexis, Graeme, Lugh, and Viv. In addition, there are 11 new anthology authors. They are ComeWhatMay, D Writes, Faust, Lesfeuxdemoncoeur, Libby Drew, Moonwolf, Myk, Rose Strailo, Tiffani Chin, TL The Writing Tiger, and Tristan Jaimes. The new anthology authors wrote some wonderful stories and so did the veterans of anthology. Since I personally reviewed many of the stories, I am now at liberty to discuss some of the ones that I found the most intriguing. Corvus’s story, “What Mrs. Gordon Learned” was a marvelous and intriguing masterpiece. Mrs. Gordon seemed not to be the only one to learn some important lessons. Anyone who reads this tale of woe will definitely have something to think about. Graeme’s story was yet another. Yes, life on the streets can be terrible for teens, because there are so many perils awaiting them. Yet, at the end, hope and faith in humanity was restored. Many of the stories are about personal struggles, including my own. People often have secrets, or burdens, that eat at the very fabric of their humanity. Take Tiff’s story as an example. As the title suggests, it is all about inner demons and flushing them out. Lesfeuxdemoncoeur’s story was an intriguing look at a teen’s struggle to find acceptance and the lessons he had to learn in the school of hard knocks. Another example of great interpretation for this theme was standing up for what you believe in. Myk’s story, “Stepping into the Light”, was a beacon of light for this particular interpretation. Sometimes a person is being hurt by others and somebody has to take charge and make it stop. Menzoberranzen’s story, “The Burden We Bear”, also sheds light on such an interpretation as it shows us the price of silence and inaction. One of the most difficult challenges in life is accepting ourselves and each other as who we are. Altimexis, Bardeara, Krista, and Viv all dedicated their stories to this particular interpretation. From those who secretly love each other to a transgendered teen trying to find love and acceptance, these stories gave insight into the minds of those with such a need. This indeed has been an anthology with some exceptional stories. The anthology team did a wonderful job with everything that needed to be done. I am appreciative of the opportunity to work with anthology team, though I wish I could have done more. I look forward to reading the last few I have yet to read, and I encourage everyone to read these stories and let the authors know what you think. ---------------------------------------- GAY
AUTHORS INCORPORATES In the beginning there were the stereotypical fundraising drives to help recoup the cost. With the advent of advertising revenues, Gay Authors has been able to mostly do away with those fundraising drives. The bad side of that has been that when the revenues we receive from advertising have not covered costs, or Gay Authors needed to handle the cost of improvements, it has by and large come out of one person, the site's creator, Myr. There is a problem with success though, and the simple fact is that Gay Authors has grown too big for its britches. With a host of liability issues, funding issues as revenues slip below rising costs, and the sheer volume of administrative tasks, Gay Authors has become too much for one person to continue running. Gay Authors was limited by its type of ownership in how it could pursue certain revenue concepts to cover increasing costs. As Gay Authors grew, the legal liabilities, and tax liabilities that Myr was incurring kept growing. A solution for these problems has been tossed around for the past year, and the administrative team has finally decided to follow one of the possible solutions that will keep Gay Authors running and focused on meeting its original goals. This solution is that the Administrative Team has entered into a private Corporation known as CDEJR Web Services, Inc. Gay Authors will be run by its new ownership, CDEJR Web Services. Shares in CDEJR Web Services are owned by Edward Ryder (Myr), Joe Pfannerstill (JSmith), Robert Jordan (Trebs), and Dan Kirk (dkstories). At this time there will be no public offerings of shares, and no single person owns a majority of the shares in CDEJR Web Services. Does this mean there are going to be changes? Yes, of course GA will change. One thing will not change though. Our mission, the goal of Gay Authors is and will remain to provide a safe place on the web for the LGBT community, a home for not only great stories, but a place to talk, to share, and to be safe. (Remember, Gay Authors is where two of the shareholders in CDEJR Web Services met and fell in love - we won't want to lose this place that started our relationship). Since this is a community, we will always be looking for feedback from our members, and searching for ways to improve ourselves. Thank you for your continued support and for making Gay Authors one of the greatest place on the web! |
The GAzette will try to feature an interview on each edition, so this month we have interviewed an Editor, Emoe57. GA: EMoe57, our sincere thanks for agreeing to be interviewed. EMoe57: I'm honored to be asked! GA: So, let's get started then. What is the secret behind the screen name, EMoe57? EMoe57: I didn't know it was a secret... EMoe is derived from my name (first initial and beginning of my last name) and the year I was born. When I first tiptoed out of the closet back in 1977, I was in the Marine Corp. I dropped the 'E' on my first name and went by Rick. I thought it would make it harder for people to trace me. Silly, I know. When I came out on the Internet back in the '90s, I needed to create a handle and decided to give 'E' the prominent position to make up for hiding it back then. This was what I came up with and it has served me well. GA: That is quite an interesting tale. I'm curious though, how did you find GA? EMoe57: When I started browsing the Internet, I discovered Nifty.org with it's vast collection of stories of all stripes, but many of them left much to be desired as 'stories'. From Nifty, I found Comicality’s Shack Out Back. When Comicality moved over to GA, I came along for the ride and discovered I was HOME!
EMoe57: It got me to come out - as an editor of gay stories on the Internet to my family. I was already out to them as gay, but that is a whole other story Also, I already have my ticket and hotel reservations for the big meet-up in Dallas in June. Definitely wouldn’t be doing that without GA. GA: That's great. I'm sure you'll have a nice time there. Now, everybody here knows that you're an editor. How did you get into editing? EMoe57: For some reason, when I read, the goofs jump out at me - online or the printed page, doesn't matter. In conversation with other people, I’ve found their brain tends to auto-correct for them. I guess that means I’m defective DK was kind enough to accept me with no real experience editing and we worked out a routine that seems to function well for the other authors I work with. My regulars are DK, JHaze, BW & CJames. I've done some one-off work for others as well. GA: Wow! That is quite a list. Some very famous authors you have there. What is it like working with the King of Evil Cliffhangers? EMoe57: As I pointed out earlier, I usually don't know where the stories are going or how they are getting there, so it is as much a surprise to me when I read a chapter as it is when they get posted. I may be a chapter or three ahead of what is online, but I don't know the conclusion any more than you do. Will Joe Clump finally profess his undying love for - oh wait, you don't know about that yet. Well, never mind... GA: And you really did not have any background in editing? EMoe57: I was good in English and Writing courses in school but I never took Editing 101 Perhaps because I enjoy reading so much. GA: Well, then I am glad you discovered this side to yourself. How do you go about your editing? Do you use features like Track Changes or you have some unique method? EMoe57: Track Changes ROCKS! Most changes are obvious goofs (Homonyms & wrong names), but sometimes, an author gets stuck with a word that appears over & over in a chapter and I try to change those and tell them why I made the change. Early on, I would inject my comments into the story to substantiate why – but those kept ending up posted with the story, so I don’t do that any more. After I’ve read it, I set it aside for a few days when time allows, then I go back and read it again. You’d be surprised how much more I pick up with that second pass. Another trick I use to help with consistency: when I receive a new chapter, I read the previous chapter first to help root the storyline in my head. And if a story has more than a dozen names (people, places, etc), a separate running description list is invaluable. I’m the first to tell you that I don’t catch everything, and my changes have been wrong on occasion. Most stories I’m involved in are series and I’ll only get the first couple of chapters. I have no idea where the story is going, so I can’t be much help with the flow. I do work hard to ensure that any changes I make still sound like the author wrote them. And all my authors know that any changes I send back are only my suggestion – what they use is their decision. I read a post where an editor whined about his author not using all the changes. Hello! It is their story to do with as they please. I’m just grateful to ALL the authors out there who are willing to share themselves via the written word. GA: Do you have any pet peeves (errors) when reading stories that you have not edited? Some common errors that authors make that makes you smack your forehead? EMoe57: For God sake people - SPELL CHECK! It isn't always the right word suggested, but it will at least get even the wrong word spelled correctly. If it gets too bad, I stop reading and find something else. I did that a lot on Nifty, but not so much on GA. I hear authors hate Word’s ‘check as you go’ feature because it interrupts their train of thought. No biggie – it can be turned off. Just hit F7 at the end – after you save, of course. Then, if you like what you’ve got – send it on to your editor. And every author needs an editor. Lord knows I can’t edit anything I’ve written – just ask the people I work with… GA: True, very true. There are some errors that an author cannot catch on his own. Your hobbies besides editing? EMoe57: Reading and old-style video games like Pac Man plus every Saturday night, I get together with a big group of friends and have a pot luck dinner and play our version of Uno Attack/Spin. GA: That sounds like fun. Your 5 favorite movies, stories (from GA or elsewhere), song, books....etc? EMoe57: I’m a big SciFi fan so the Star trek movies and original Star Wars trilogy, Lord of the Rings trilogy. I seldom watch a movie more than once – even when I loved it – and I’ve seen all of these more than once. As for stories, when I find an author I like, I tend to read all their stuff so I’m just going to list authors. Since I enjoy reading the authors I edit, I’m going to exclude them from the list: Driver9’s writing is superb and Grasshopper is right up there with him. Graeme; DeweyWriter; Jack Scribe; Draginacht; Brew Maxwell; Christopher Lydon (I bought his Falcon Banner books); Mike Arran; Tim Mead; Journeyman had me crying every chapter; I miss Jet. Oops, I ran over As for printed books, I just finished reading James Swain’s Tony Valentine series. I don’t listen to music unless I’m in the car going somewhere. Then, it’s the local smooth jazz station.
EMoe57: I was concerned about space since I was getting a little long-winded here. GA: EMoe57, it has been a pleasure talking to you. Thanks a ton for taking the time to share something about you with us. EMoe57: Thank YOU for helping GA grow! |

A young woman named Addison Young gave birth to her son, Adam Young. She lived in a poor neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn. Addison turned to a life of crime to support her young son. She became an assassin for the All-American mafia. She was well adjusted to the night, for she was a vampire. I have covered my tracks well. Until now, no one has ever known my true identity. My childhood was a lonely and sullen one. My mother often brought home men to sire. She was an ace manipulator. Once the unfortunate souls were sired, they were destined for servitude. Addison quickly became a leader of the All-American mafia. Her powers made her an excellent yet tyrannical leader. |

Sneak Peek of Kevin’s Story (AfriendlyFace) “Buy Me a Drink” Excerpt from Chapter One: “Hot Mess” “Looks like Bmad’s got another one.” Have you ever heard the phrase ‘hot mess’? Bmad is a hot mess. I know this because I heard Daisy call him that last weekend. Thus it must either be a cool new term, or else Daisy was just pretending to have a personality. But I’m getting ahead of myself. First, let me bring you up to speed. It’s Friday night, a little after midnight, and I’m doing what I do every Friday and Saturday night. I’m leaning against the back bar in Bender’s talking to Jake – professional bartender/amateur A-gay observer – and watching Mick, my best friend, take off his clothes for money. Now I’m sure you’re all wondering what a nice boy like me is doing in a place like Bender’s. Actually you may just be wondering what type of place Bender’s is at all. Well, you’re in luck because I’m about to tell you. Bender’s is the hottest, busiest gay club in Houston. Let’s just say it’s not the first place you would think to look for an average, regular sort of guy like me. Well, actually given my routine I suppose it IS the first place you would look for me on a Friday night. Anyway, you’re not looking. I am. Right at my best friend’s killer thighs and scantily clad, but very well endowed, package. See I’m his “boyfriend”. Well not really. I’m his pretend boyfriend. Have you ever heard the rumors? You know… the ones about how all the strippers at gay clubs are straight. Well guess what? They’re true. At least they are in Mick’s case. And now that you know who Mick is, let me introduce you to my co-observer, Jake the bartender. Have you heard the rumors? You know… about the bartenders at gay clubs being straight? Anyway, you see where this is going. Anyway, Jake is the Bmad spotter in this instance, and as I look away from Mick’s perfectly formed abs, I see that he has indeed found his next victim. Bmad is of course just what Jake and I call him. It comes from the fact that his trademark line is “Buy me a drink?” or Bmad. Anyway, Bmad is like the epitome of shallow, self-obsessed, insecure A-gays. He’s about 6’, light brown hair with subtle blonde highlights, glaringly white and impossibly straight – and believe me that’s the only part of him that is – teeth, perfect tan, and a smooth, lean, swimmer’s body. Bmad is also woefully incompetent when it comes to keeping track of shirts…or underwear. So he usually just parades around topless in skin tight jeans – gotta show off your best assets right? – with a belt carefully selected to go with whatever type of wrist or neck adornment he’s chosen for the evening. Anyway, Bmad has a system of his own. Every Friday and Saturday night he shows up with his crew: ‘Daisy’, ‘Giorgio’, and ‘Cosmo’ - more on them later - and he gets free drinks all night, eventually settles on a trick, and then goes home, presumably to get his brains – such as they are – f**ked out. Here’s what happens, he and the gang show up around 11, sometimes a bit later, and he scans the crowd. He selects the loneliest, neediest looking guys, sidles up to them from behind, throws an arm around their neck, slides around to the front (making sure to maintain maximum body contact of course), flashes them a seductive grin, and says in a playful voice, “buy me a drink?” ******** It was the last thing I was expecting. I was just leaning against the bar, casually appreciating Mick’s pecs, when the next thing I know someone was against my back. Then I felt a hand go around my neck, and then the beautiful guy slid around front – maintaining maximum body contact – and gave me a seductive grin and I swear I got so light headed and weak in the knees, that his question/statement caught me off guard in spite of myself. “Buy me a drink?” |
