Poems for Ross - 9. Appendix: the 'lost' Ross Poem

Appendix: the 'lost' Ross Poem

There actually is one more poem dedicated to this boy. It appears in short story In Six Hours. This small verse is about the way Ross initially said hello to me, through a scrap of paper he passed to me on the first day of our algebra class together.

Poem No. 23

See them there,

The countless numbers

An errant code and retelling

Of figures new and old,

And you – you pass me a note:

"Hi," it said. "I'm Ross."

And for me there,

Stymied by numbers

Counting my heartbeats retelling

Of hopes new and old,

And you – you pass me a smile:

"Hi," it said. "I'm yours."

Like meeting an old friend. Familiar and instant recognition. One of the sweetest in the row and I agree it shouldn't be absent.

I am always surprised how the simplest things can have a huge impact on our lives...out of the clear blue sky, a whole new layer has been added to your existence, and wraps you in possibilities.
So good to have this here, and it fits just right at the end.

Thank you, J.HunterDunn. I know you have read Becoming Real, so the presence of this poem will not be a surprise, but I did honestly forget it's tucked in there.

Thank you, ColumbusGuy. The reference to numbers in the poem itself is trying to hint at the possibility you mention: of the odds of something happening, and how one small change can mean a big one.
