GA Writing Prompts - 35. # 145 A Real Man

A Real Man

This is the story that I was once told
About a man who was brave and bold
He quit his job at the local clothing store
To set out for the adventure that he was longing for
He had dreamed of this adventure his entire life
Now his dream would finally come alive

He packed his bag. He took along a recipe book
A man on a trip needs to know how to cook
He left town in his vintage car with a smile on his lips
And then he set out. He drove down Route 66
He was listening to the radio. They were playing Pink Floyd
The Pink Box album, just the songs je enjoyed

He was feeling great. He was cool. He was feeling good
He was a winner, a champion, a man like Tiger Woods
He would drive for days or even for weeks
This is the adventure that every real man seeks
Night fell. He stopped at a motel and checked into it
He had a quick dinner and then he rested a bit

He woke up. His stomach rumbled. Was he feeling sick?
The man startled. An upset stomach? Or an attack of colic?
An attack of indigestion? Food intoxication perhaps?
A cold? A viral infection? Or a circulatory collapse?
The man sat up in his bed. He was highly alarmed.
His eyes widened. Was something wrong with his heart?

The man breathed deeply. The faint pain would not fade
He got up slowly. Perhaps it was already too late
He had once read about the postcardiotomy syndrome
Perhaps it was best to check out and drive home
Sweat covered his forehead as he climbed into his car
He wished he had no vintage car but a fast Jaguar

He drove cautiously and all the way with a frown
His stomach rumbled when he arrived at his town
The man spotted a diner and he drove up the drive
He jumped out of his car, his spirits revived
“Hey,” a man said. “Not seen you in a while, Bob Leeks.”
Bob smiled. “It was cool. I’ve been on the road for four weeks.”
