Changling - 1. Changling

Short Stories

Changeling

No one believed him of course. But then again, why should they? He had no proof to his tale, nothing to back up the events of the previous night. Hell, if he were hearing his tale he wouldn't believe him. He sat there looking at his father and began again.

"There are elves in the forest behind the house."

"Now son, last month it was ghosts in the attic. Do you really expect me to believe you when you say you've seen elves?"

Robin looked just past his father's shoulder to where Bridget and Jeremy stood in the shadow, fading into the wall. "There are ghosts in this house papa, and there are elves in the forest."

His father looked at him again and shook his head. "So you have no explanation for why your clothes are filthy and torn except you were following these alleged elves in the forest?"

"None, sir."

His father sighed again. "What will it be next time? Vampires in the cellar?"

"No, sir, I've already checked." Robin said with all sincerity.

His father shook his head. "Go to bed Robin."

"Yes papa."

"And Robin..."

"Yes papa?"

"Nothing else about the ghosts and elves, school starts soon and we don't want the same thing to happen here as happened before."

"Yes, papa." Robin nodded his head and scampered up the stair with Bridget and Jeremy following close behind. Once up in his room he shut the door and giggled.

"So do they suspect?"

"Suspect what?" the changeling asked the Elvin Lord, "I think I shall have fun here."

"I think you shall too. The boy was just too sensitive for this world."

"You will be good to him?"

"I'll treat him like my own child."

"Fair thee well."

The changeling-Robin grinned as the Elvin Lord scampered off toward the forest. There were elves in the forest, and no one believed him of course.

Ooh... took me a while for the implications to sink in. Just a little bit unpleasant, isn't it? and so true to the traditional character of 'fairy folk'... they are cruel in their treatment of humans. Very subtle and fine.

Editorially: One has proof of, not for, I think that's what you wrote... I should have copied it. and don't forget to put a comma before the person's name in speech, thus. "You'll be a good boy, Robin?".

So they took the original "too sensitive" boy to the world of fairies. It took me some time to figure out the meaning of changling. I liked this story. Where the boy and the girl fading to the wall the chosts? :D Reall fine, but not the quickie you'd expect!

A new take on an old theme. Love how this time the changeling isn't so much a babe but a child who has and established identity. Will make Robin's replacement a bit harder to keep up his act. Careful now, there are Elves in the woods and who knows what other creatures may yet turn up. Lovely story just wish there was more, but that is always my problem with flash, draws you in but never enough.

flash is supposed to be little glimpses, like a snapshot I guess. This does that. Glad you liked it.

Lugh,

Pardon me if I seem familiar, my account seemed to vanish after my first few reviews and I this way I am just going back to say which I enjoyed and wanted to make sure credit is given again. I got the nickname Comicfan and now all my posts are showing but with no names attached. Thank you again for "A new take on an old theme.
