Vignettes - 6. Advice

Shawn is my best friend, not counting Miles of course. We met on our first day at college. He warned me about Markey. Advice I too blithely ignored. He rescued me after the catastrophe. I always seek advice from him now. Shawn is my best friend.

“Love, you can’t continue on like this! I know what a troubled relationship looks like. Listen carefully Ian: yours is not one of them! God couldn’t build a boy more in love with you than Miles! Honey, you simply need to stop interpreting each hiccup as Miles morphing into Markey! If anything, you’re going to create a rift in your relationship, one that doesn’t exist now!”

“Are you sure Shawn? I don’t think I could go on living if it happened again.”

“Ian, think back to the first few years we experienced at college. Think back to how you felt about life and love and happiness. Now become that irrepressible boy again. That’s the first half of my advice.”

Maybe Shawn is right. Why do I see everything in a dark light? Markey, that’s why. If I keep doing this, Markey still has his hold on me. Shawn is definitely right. Shawn is my best friend.

“Shawn ...thanks! You’re right, as usual. I simply must turn the page, and I promise you I will. Now, what do you mean by the first half of your advice. Is there a second half?”

“Yes. It’s three-thirty in the morning. Go back to bed and cuddle-up with the boy who loves you.”

Poor Ian, now he's waking up his best friend to join him in a restless night. I'm glad Shawn had the patience to listen, then tell him what his situation really was, and how to keep it from turning into a repeat of Markey. It's sound advice...I hope Ian can make it part of himself.

Yes it seems Ian is finally trying to move on if he recognizes his fears keep Markey in control.

Clearly, this has taken him a long time!

Everyone needs a Shawn. I understand that Ian is wary and watchful, and he probably can't help it. He knows Shawn is right though, so I hope he can take the advice and keep Markey out of his relationship.
We understand Ian just a little bit more this round. I maybe just a bit sympathetic too...

Wow, those middle-of-the-night phone calls always seem to be the most meaningful ones, huh?

I hope Ian got the message, and Shawn sounds like a great friend to have. A lot us don't have that person who will pick up at 3:30AM... Loved this piece. Please keep the Ian and Miles story up!

What a great friend Shawn is! Talking to Ian at 3:30 a.m.!

 

Shawn is right; Ian needs to put the past (and Markey) behind him b/c as long as he fears that hold over him, he'll never move on and then Markey will win. Miles is nothing like Markey, and Ian needs to keep remembering that.

Maybe Ian is about to develop some confidence. Shawn sure helps him see things more clearly. He couldn't ask for a better partner than Miles.

Hey Tim!

Just think of that. A friend he can call in the wee hours and a boyfriend who loves him unconditionally. Ian is more than lucky, he's blessed! Maybe he's about to realize this (fingers crossed)
