Music That Makes You Think Of CAP

Recommended Posts

I do the offical music recs, but I've gotten a couple of comments from people who've wanted to post music they like that makes them think of the story. I thought this would be an unofficial thread for people to do that.

There's only one rule, though- a music recomendation you make CAN'T be a song that was released after the story takes place. If you're recomending a song for Man In Motion, you can't recomend a song that came out after 1986. If you're recomending a song for That Land Whore, you can't use a song that came out after 1974. So no use of Miley Cyrus *looks pointedly at Mark M* for any of the stories so far, since we've only gotten as far as 1999 in the CAP saga. That said, if you would like to use a song that came out well BEFORE a story takes- like say, using a 1971 song like Baba O'Riley for the Who to score a scene from the 1980-1981 set Be Rad, that is perfectly okay. You just can't use Hungry Like the Wolf for a Be Rad scene, since that is a 1982 song.

I'll start. Here's a song from 1986:

Human by The Human League

The song makes me think of Robbie and Brad's up-and-down relationship in Be Rad.

I've finally found a decent link to Man in Motion by John Parr. For all you whippersnappers who weren't even a gleam in their daddy's eye in 1985, Man in Motion was the theme song to a well-known movie called St. Elmo's Fire, which followed a group of Georgetown University graduates as they struggled with the start of adulthood. It's the inspiration behind the title of Mark's story, Man in Motion. *states the obvious*

Man in Motion by John Parr

Growin' up, you don't see the writing on the wall

Passin' by, movin' straight ahead, you knew it all

But maybe sometime if you feel the pain

You'll find you're all alone, everything has changed

Play the game, you know you can't quit until it's won

Soldier on, only you can do what must be done

You know in some way you're a lot like me

You're just a prisoner and you're tryin' to break free

I can see a new horizon underneath the blazin' sky

I'll be where the eagle's flying higher and higher

Gonna be your man in motion, all I need is a pair of wheels

Take me where my future's lyin', St. Elmo's Fire

Burning up, don't know just how far that I can go (just how far I go)

Soon be home, only just a few miles down the road

I can make it, I know I can

You broke the boy in me, but you won't break the man

I can see a new horizon underneath the blazin' sky

I'll be where the eagle's flying higher and higher

Gonna be your man in motion, all I need is a pair of wheels

Take me where my future's lyin', St. Elmo's Fire

I can climb the highest mountain, cross the wildest sea

I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me, burnin' in me

Just once in his life a man has his time

and my time is now, I'm coming alive

I can hear the music playin', I can see the banners fly

Feel like you're back again, and hope ridin' high

Gonna be your man in motion, all I need is a pair of wheels

Take me where my future's lyin', St. Elmo's Fire

Elmo's Fire burnin' in me

Burnin', burnin' in me, I can feel it burnin'

Oooh, burnin' inside of me... (to fade)

When Mark was telling me about the story idea he had about Brad as a senior in college in 1985, I thought that Man in Motion was a fitting song. It really does do a good job of describing where Brad was at in his life at the age of 23.

Desireless - Voyage, voyage

[url="

I'm not sure to what story to put this... it has to be Man in Motion or later, as this song is from 1985. It reminds me of Stef and what voyages he could do with all his money but he never did (or we don't know about it).

Here's the original lyrics and their translation by Kate Ryan:

Voyage

Et jamais ne revient.

English lyrics:

Above the ancient volcanoes,

Wings gliding through the ruffling flags of the wind,

Voyage, voyage,

Eternally.

From clouds in swamps,

From the Spanish wind to the equatorial rain,

Voyage, voyage,

Fly in the highlands

Above the capitals,

Look upon the ocean…

Voyage, voyage

Farther than night and day, (voyage, voyage)

Voyage (voyage)

In the incredible feelings of love.

Voyage, voyage

Upon the holy water of an Indian river, (voyage voyage)

Voyage (voyage)

And never come back.

On the Ganges or the Amazon,

With Blacks, with Sikhs, with Asians

Voyage, voyage

In the whole kingdom.

Upon the dunes of the Sahara,

From the Islands of Fiji to Fujiyama,

Voyage, voyage,

Don’t stop.

Above the barbed wire fences,

Stricken hearts

Look upon the ocean.

Voyage, voyage

Farther than night and day, (voyage, voyage)

Voyage (voyage)

In the incredible feelings of love.

Voyage, voyage

Upon the holy water of an Indian river, (voyage voyage)

Voyage (voyage)

And never come back.

Above the capitals,

Deathly ideas

Look upon the ocean.

Voyage, voyage

Farther than night and day, (voyage, voyage)

Voyage (voyage)

In the incredible feelings of love.

Voyage, voyage

Upon the holy water of an Indian river, (voyage voyage)

Voyage (voyage)

And never come back.

Had this song come out in 1981 instead of 1982, I would have used this for Claire in Be Rad. I suppose I can use this for Claire in Man In Motion, although she had slightly matured. Still, once a mall rat, always a mall rat. Anyways...to Claire Crampton Hobart- the ultimate mall rat!

Good choice. I almost picked the Young and Restless theme for the scene in The Box where Nick tries to challenge Stefan about the contents of the trunk, but I decidedly that ultimately the Dallas theme fits better because of the power struggle that the show was about. (Not that I really watched the show- it's just what I heard. I was a Dynasty guy. I long to get into a catfight in a pond.)

The Dallas theme definitely works too. I never actually watched Dynasty, but I did hear about the catfight in the pond.

This is for Brad and Robbie in MiM.

"Open Your Heart" by Madonna

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1vlvsqw_IU

I see you on the street and you walk on by

You make me wanna hang my head down and cry

If you gave me half a chance you'd see

My desire burning inside of me

But you choose to look the other way

I've had to work much harder than this

For something I want don't try to resist me

Open your heart to me, baby

I hold the lock and you hold the key

Open your heart to me, darlin'

I'll give you love if you, you turn the key

I think that you're afraid to look in my eyes

You look a little sad boy, I wonder why

I follow you around but you can't see

You're too wrapped up in yourself to notice

So you choose to look the other way

Well, I've got something to say

Don't try to run I can keep up with you

Nothing can stop me from trying, you've got to

Open your heart with the key

One is such a lonely number

Ah, ah, ah, ah

Open your heart, I'll make you love me

It's not that hard, if you just turn the key

Don't try to run I can keep up with you

Nothing can stop me from trying, you've got to

Open your heart with the key

Open your heart, I'll make you love me

It's not that hard, if you just turn the key

Here's another B/R rec...and for MiM again. I thought it kinda fits for how they sneak around behind Neil's back at the start of the story.

"Tenderness" by General Public

don't know when to start or when to stop

My luck's like a button

I can't stop pushing it

My head feels light

But I'm still in the dark

Seems like without tenderness there's something missing

Tenderness

Where is the

Tenderness

Where is it?

I don't know where I am but I know I don't like it

I open my mouth and out pops something spiteful

Words are so cheap, but they can turn out expensive

Words like conviction can turn into a sentence

I held your hands

Rings but none on that finger

We danced and danced

But I was scared to go much further with it

Just half a chance

Make sure that one night you're here,

But next night you're not

It always leaves me searching for a little

Tenderness

Where is the

Tenderness

Where is the

Tenderness?

Whistling in the graveyard

Calling up your girlfriend

Just trying to make her understand

You're squeezing the telephone like it was her hand

No question (so many questions)

She's going to catch you out boy

It all seems so underhand

Now she's the only thing that ever made you feel like a man, man

Madman, madman

Tenderness

Where is the

Tenderness

Tenderness

Tenderness

Where is it?

I held your hands

Rings but none on that finger

We danced and danced

But I was scared to go much further with it

Just half a chance

Make sure that one night you're here,

But next night you're not

It always leaves me searching for a little

Tenderness

Where is the

Tenderness?

When you're sick to death of second best, pet

Why should the morning always find you unimpressed?

Is your love like a button?

You can't stop pushing it?

Oh this all night longing can be such a long time...

Any of you guys remember this song from earlier than the '95 movie Clueless? I didn't realize this song had been much earlier than movie until later.

Since Blue, Matt, Tommmy, and Tim seem to be really interested in posting music picks, I thought I'd bring this one back up for them to post more picks in. So, come on guys! I fully expect you guys to post in this fan thread instead of the official one for fun!

The rule that the music must be from the era is redacted. More fun this way.

For Brad and Robbie during "Millenium".

LOL. God, I had a crush on Eric Lively back around 1999-2000. Such a cute guy back then.

For Will and John.

God, it'll be fun when we get to 2003 and I can use that one. I'm sure, given the way these people bedhop, it'll be appropriate.

And Ace, in the scene where he's naked with Bianca in bed with him while Brad teases him, in Man In Motion.

Brandon Stoughton is freaking hot as hell.

Stefan's pre-AIDS Hollywood orgy parties.

God, I wish I had been around in the late 70's. Just seemed like one very hedonistic time where anything went.

I almost submitted this song to the theme song thread, but it really doesn't fit as a theme song for an entire character. However, when I think of how Wade and JP interact, and quite possibly how Wade is approching the opening chapters of this story, this song demands attention:

The Judd's "Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days)"

It's one of my favorite songs ever, as evidenced by one of the few stories I've submitted here borrows a lyric for it's title.

Here's something I've realized about myself in doing music for "Millenium" and "Poor Man's Son." Hip-hop really ingrained itself on me way more than I thought it had when I was growing up. I didn't consider myself a hip-hop/r&b fan when I was 15, but I gotta admit, when I go back for songs that bring back memories, I'm often heading towards stuff like Eminem and DMX. It's kinda funny how setting my "music clock" back to 2000 has made me realize how the music that plays around you at a certain age can really imprint itself on you. I went to middle school and high school in fairly urban areas, with urban kids, so hip-hop and hip-hop culture was all around me, even though I didn't partake in it.

Although really, hip-hop was everywhere, including and not least white upper-class suburban kids. It's really interesting how the music background of one's adolescent impresses itself on you.

If this had been out in 2000, there's no doubt in my mind I would have used it for Brad and Robbie for Millenium:

And I probably would have used "Peaches and Cream" for Will and John Hobart's hook-up scenes:

"Beautiful Goodbye" by Amanda Marshall. Listed by a website I follow as one of the "Lost Hits of the 90s", but more accurately a list of songs that weren't chart toppers but in the opinion of the compiler, should have been. This one I agree with.

Ostensibly, it's about a woman that doesn't quite regret a breakup, but exists in that twilight state of "I think I should be happy, but how can I be happy," that I'm sure many of us can remember at one point or another, with a huge heap of guilt thrown in. I find it applicable to, oh, any number of relationships in 9-11, as missed opportunities seems to be a theme for this book.

I like to think of it as Elizabeth Danfield's though. I know not many agree with my reading of her character, but I think she really did love her husband and family, to the extent that she was able. Her methods of expressing that love were just so terrible. I wonder if, after the will reading, she went home thinking over every step she took that led her to being so alone in a room of those that knew her best, and wondering how she got there when she did only what she thought she had to.

Edit: my favorite bit is the chorus. The entire song, I can easily imagine her singing to her ex-husband's casket, but the chorus tells the story. "When I see you now, I wonder how/ I could have watched you walk away. If I let you down, please forgive me now/ for that beautiful goodbye."
