R I P John Hurt 1940-2017

John Hurt (link to Wikipedia) was probably best known for his roles in Alien, The Elephant Man and Nineteen Eighty-Four. LGBT audiences probably remember him for The Naked Civil Servant and Midnight Express. Younger audiences might know him from the Harry Potter series.

 

But he had a long list of interesting and unusual credits to his name.

 

He will be missed.

Sadly a few last minute additions to the Academy Awards Memorial Reel.

 

 

But John Hurt (and MTM) left many hours of their work for us to enjoy to remember them by.

 

Possibly MTM's most iconic scene was the final clip in her eponymous show's opening credits sequence: the slow motion tossing of her knit hat in the air! While John's most iconic scene comes from Alien when the creature bursts out of his chest! They couldn't possibly be more different.

You could have offered to pay me money if I was able to put a name to a picture of him. Your money would have been safe. The characters and roles he played are what stuck in my mind. The first was Richard Rich. The rest spanned all the years since. Caligula, Doctor Who, Midnight Express, Alien, John Merrick. The list just goes on. He did so much, right up until the end, a real trooper.

Now the exact opposite was true of MTM. A mere glimpse of her face or sound of her voice and the name was right there.

 

Both were masters of their craft. I will miss them both deeply. Any chance I get, I would watch one of their films / series or episodes where ever they were offered.

He played a wide variety of interesting roles and will be missed.  RIP John Hurt.  

 

Also, Mike Connors, star of the TV show Mannix (1967 - 1975) also passed away this week.  He was 91.  RIP Mike Connors.

It seems as if time is speeding up as more and more of those that we knew pass on before us.

 

 

I don't think I missed even one episode of that series(Mannix). In looking at his career, almost everything thing he appeared in I probably saw at one time or another. Much like Sir John. The name might escape me, but his face is etched on a portrait hanging forever on the walls of memory in the galleries  my mind.

 

One movie that comes to mind of his. A comedy, I try to find and watch when ever possible.

He was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Midnight Express" (1978). And was nominated for his second Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Actor for "The Elephant Man" (1980). Both movies are among the best ones that I have ever seen and are very hard to watch; I recall that I was in my early teens the first time that I watched them, and could not sleep very well thinking about them. I definitely recommend them.

I personally loved him as The War Doctor in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor... But also as Quentin Crisp, omg!

Thank you for telling me! Plenty of my friends have recommended ''Doctor Who'' to me, but I was never really interested. I might give it a shot during Christmas break.
