The Journal of Chris Williams - 2. Journal 2

Journal entry 2:

When I first showed up here by myself, I thought I was going to be turned away–or worse. I checked in at the pack offices and reported immediately to the alpha. He had me explain what Michael had done when we parted ways. I told Alpha Jennings how he suggested we go on some random camping trip instead of driving straight through to Columbia River. How we fought about me no longer willing to follow him when I refused. And how I finally blew up over everything we’d done. For all the bullshit we pulled over the years and for the way I let him treat me all that time. I described how after having enough of everything involving Michael I punched him as hard as I could, got into my car, and left him in a cloud of dust. All I wanted was to get back on the road to head here. I probably should have called in and said Michael did a runner, but at the time I was just glad to be rid of him. The ankle monitoring company should have called it in anyways. I was actually happy I could make the cross country drive without him around. When I left him in that parking lot, the idea of being in the same pack with him turned my stomach. I hoped I’d never see him again. A part of me even wished he’d end up getting hunted down and dealt with.

Alpha Jennings was at first hopeful Michael would turn up in a few days. He thought maybe it was a simple matter of acting out and rebelling against being told what to do by his father. Basically, a teenager throwing one last tantrum before giving in. I kind of thought the same thing and when he realized he had nowhere else to go, he would turn up. Most likely with some lame excuse for why he was late in arriving. He could have easily blamed the delay on that obnoxious Mercedes of his breaking down again. Who lets their bratty-ass, bitch of a kid pick out a top of the line Mercedes AMG SUV as their high school graduation present? That last bit is just a random off-topic thought and is in no way intended as disrespect towards Alpha Stockdale. Given the disrespect I’ve shown him in the past I want to be crystal clear here.

It soon became obvious Michael wasn’t going to turn up. I honestly think sending us to drive cross country with only a GPS monitor on our ankle was a test to see if our lives were worth sparing. With everything we did, there should have been an escort with each of us. I don’t know what was happening behind the scenes with regard to Michael running off. My only involvement was to be interviewed several times by members of the pack leadership about what happened, what was said, and the last time I saw him. I think they wanted to see if my story changed at all, but thankfully the truth doesn’t change. I held nothing back and answered any question they put to me. I even volunteered any additional information I could think of, no matter how small, just to show I was being cooperative.

It wasn’t until a few days later when the pack’s enforcer showed up at my apartment that things seemed to take a turn for the worse. I was told they needed to search my car as there might be some problem. I had been honest about everything I knew and couldn’t figure out what problem might involve my car. It had been sitting in the same parking spot since I arrived here. During their search, they found Michael’s ankle monitor hidden in my trunk. I don’t know when he managed to put it there or how that bastard got it off without triggering an alert. He planted it where I wouldn’t find it. It wasn’t easy for the investigators to find either. They practically had to pull out everything in the trunk. He rigged it so it was continually getting charged since a low battery sets off an alarm with the monitoring company. I know, because I forgot to plug mine in once and got a warning call from the company to charge it or risk forfeiting my home confinement.

It was Alpha Jennings who came to me after they finished processing my car. He explained they found Michael’s GPS tracker in my trunk. He explained the monitoring company had pinpointed Michael’s location as being where my car was sitting. That was why they needed to search it. I was so afraid they would think I was involved in helping him get away. The alpha was fair and the investigation into what might have happened went quickly. They pointed out it would have been much easier to get the ankle monitor hidden than it would have been to find. He seemed to believe what I told him. I sat before the man with my head in my hands, repeating, “This can’t be happening.” Panic set in over what this might mean for my own fate. Thankfully wolves can usually pick up the scent or other indicators of when someone is lying. Especially from a terrified wolf like me. They knew I was being honest about not knowing anything. Even if I wanted to lie to anyone here, I’m too scared of losing what little of a new home I have to risk it. I am not going to screw up this chance I was given to come here. I promised my mom I would make a new life and get a fresh start. I don’t ever want to go back to the kind of person I was that got me exiled.

It was the panic attack I had from the GPS monitor being found in my car that led to my first session with the shrink. Yes, I know you hate being called that, but the way you cringed when I first said it made me smile a little. I promise not to call you that in person. I didn’t realize just how badly I needed help before all this hit. I thought I could deal with what I’m going through on my own. If this scared shell of a wolf I am now is what I need to be to get rid of that self absorbed, arrogant, cocky bastard I was in my old life, I will take being scared for my life since it means I still have a life to be scared about.

I really feel for Chris and I hope he will successfully integrate with the new pack. He owes it to himself to find happiness ?

I understand the comments and would like Chris to succeed, I can't help thinking that there is more to this. Childhood envy / hero worship (as stated which has been exploited (how far and by who else?) Firstly I do not think that because of Chris's statements, that the sentence handed down can be changed although there (I think) is a proviso that the current alpha may determine otherwise.Anyway wolfm will prove me and all others wrong, Why ? because it is his story... given to us and gratefully accepted

Long story short .. there is more than meets the eye

I really like the way the story is unfolding.  II read over RWTP where Chris is exiled and I can see the seeds for this story there.  This is turning out to be a very interesting path for the story and I look forward to reading more.

I am really enjoying the new perspective of this sequel. While at this point it seems more psychology. It does not detract from the story.
Actually I really think it helps with character development. I look forward to learning more about Chris's past and potential future...

Thank you Blind.  I'm having fun developing Chris as he addressing his own problems and deals with what he's done.

Thank you Jeff :)  It is kind of nerve racking to try a different style of writing, but for this character it seemed appropriate.

Thank you Peter.  It's fun seeing people wanting to see Chris succeed in his new life given what he did to get to this point, but I guess that is what this story is really about ;) or is it?

Thank you for the vote of confidence Avid.  Chris made appearances in chapters 13 through 18 for the most part in RWTP.  For something that I wrote so quickly, with the exception of editing, adding some detail and missing pieces, I'm liking this addition to this world.  Getting to share it with all of you makes it all the better.

It's interesting to see a different perspective on something that was relatively small for most of the Parker Valley characters by this point.  Well...Chris' role at least.  Michael was just beginning to ramp up his antagonism around now.  From what I recall, this is about as far as we were informed of Chris' experiences in the first book.  I look forward to seeing how he progresses & reflects, either through future actions or review of his past.  A lot was happening back in Parker Valley around this time, so I'll be curious if there are ripple effects for the major events.  Looking forward to the next!

Thank you Acid.  His only exposure prior to this was small parts in a few chapters as Michael's lackey.  So far he's expressed remorse for his actions but can he turn things around or will he revert to his old ways?  ;)

The pacing and writing were both really good in this chapter.  I do feel that Chris is already more of a fully formed character after the second chapter here than he was throughout the first book.  Can't wait to see where you take this.

At the end of this chapter, when Chris addressed his therapist and playfully called him / her his shrink, I begin to wonder if he had a crush on that person ...

It's something I use to do occasionally when I use to see a therapist.  It made her cringe every time I used the term shrink until i promised not to do it anymore.

I think that I am going to like this story very much.  It is like a few stories I have read on GA, and a reason I like GA very much.  Many of the authors here create characters that demand their own stories for a variety of reasons.  The characters may be supporting or minor, but they have a spark that catches the author's attention and results in another great story.  The beginning of this story flows nicely as it details the transition from the original story to this new circumstance.  I like the journal format as a device to tell this tale.

Thank you, Raven. Chris makes an extremely brief appearance in a few chapters of Running with the Pack starting with chapter 10. He was a use and toss character at the time. While trying to work on a follow-up to Running, and not getting very far, Chris popped into my mind.

I am so happy to see that Chris has or is trying to do better! At the time that I read about him I was fairly sure he couldn't do it!

His final interaction with his parents, he promised he'd take the chance he was given. He knows the consequences if he doesn't change is his death.
