A Fairy Out of Her Tale - Dear Diary - 29. Scene 29

In which Nessa has breakfast in bed...

12th January 1995

Dear Diary of Cereal Puns,

I didn’t have the best night of sleep after after the whole… argument? Fight? Intimidation attempt? I don’t know what to to call it - After whatever happened between me and Kris. It’s surprisingly hard to empty your mind when you think there’s a chance your new housemate is out there to get you. Who would've thought?

(Can you feel the sarcasm dripping through your pages?)

But I actually feel a lot better now. You see, I woke up with a knock on my door. Lóránt came in with my breakfast (breakfast in bed! Like a posh hotel!) and to check on me.

‘Did something happen last night?’ They asked, looking at the bandage on my belly. It had a new redish tinge to it.

‘I wanted some passion fruit juice, so I tried to go to the kitchen.’

‘It’s a bit early for you to be moving up and down stairs.’ Lóránt took the first aid kit they kept under my bedside table. ‘I’m going to take this off to check what it looks like underneath. Hopefully nothing too bad happened if it was just a walk.’

‘It wasn’t.’ How sensible would it be to tell on Kris to our guardian? He seemed to not like me already, so I couldn’t make it worse, could I? ‘I mean… I met Kris in the kitchen. He didn’t like me bring there and sort of pushed me back to my room. That’s when it hurt and I guess started bleeding. I was being really careful until then, I swear!’

Lóránt put down the scisors and the gause he was working with. ‘Is that so? I’m going to have a chat with Kris. He shouls be more careful.’

‘Why doesn’t he like me?’

‘I don’t think it was as personal as you believe. Kris just likes to be left alone, he seeks solitude like most people crave company. He shouldn’t have been angry at you, but he would’ve reacted the same way had it been anyone else.’

‘I don’t know if it makes it better or worse.’

Lóránt smiled. ‘You’re under no obligation to like all your housemates. It’s unfortunate that at the moment we don’t have other places to move either of you if it turns out you really don’t see eye to eye, so I’ll make sure Kris understands he has to be at least civil towards you.’

‘Why can’t we move anywhere else?’

‘You’re both here specifically because only angels can put up effective demon wards. In a sense, my presence in this house is what makes it safe for you.’

‘I see. Thank you for making us safe, then.’

Lóránt’s face turned so red I feared for a moment they were going to burst into flames. They didn’t seem to notice or feel it though, and just smiled at me instead. Before I knew it, I had a new bandage on my belly (I didn’t dare look at the wound itself), and Lóránt was ready to leave me alone to eat my breakfast.

‘Could you stay a little longer, please? I miss having someone to talk to.’

‘Of course.’ They sat at the foot of my bed, spreading their wings wide so they wouldn’t get on the way. ‘It must be difficult for you to be in a place where only a few people speak your language.’

‘It’s scary. I can’t tell when people are talking about me, or if something important is happening that I have no idea about.’

‘When you’re more healed and rested, we’ll give you proper language lessons. You’re going to need them if you’re staying here for the foreseeable future.’

It was only then that I realised (and by that I mean I understood in its deepest sense, not just a vague idea in my mind) that I wasn’t on a holiday. It was only 12 days ago that everything changed, but whatever happened from now on, this was my new reality. This room, this house, these people would be with me for longer than I can imagine. My new life had started with breakfast in bed and a conversation with an angel. Wherever it goes from now on, it definitely won’t be towards Floresfada and my old home.

Thanks for reading!
We're officially beginning Part 4 of the story. It's all about Nessa getting settled in her new home and getting to know the people who live in it. Which means soon she'll have more interesting things to say about her housemates.
One week from now, for example, someone might even be trying to get more than friendship out of Nessa. Who is it?
Wait a week or become my patron and find out today! ;)

I freaking love Lorant!!! So are the demons after everyone in the house, and if so, are they the same demons after Nessa

I would say Lóránt is one of my favourite characters too, but I kind of like all of them... (yes, even Kris, though not on the "I want to hang out with you" level).

You're asking a few too many plot-relevant questions. Demons in general seem to be after other people to make their armies strong. Which may or may not mean they're specifically after the people guarded by Lóránt. Which is my way of saying you'll have to keep reading to find out. ;)

I like Lorant as well, she seems to be a guardian angel for everyone in the house. I can't believe Kris had to be so gruff with Nessa when all she wanted was a glass of juice. I hope that once Nessa heals a bit more and is able to get around without having to worry about her wound coming open or bleeding again she has better luck with her house mates. I hope that the one that starts to have feelings for Nessa isn't Kris. We'll have to wait and see who it is.

Lóránt is as literally a "guardian angel" as they can get in this world. As for whether this means the same it would mean for us... Why would I spoil the surprise so soon? ;)

I'm glad you like them, though.

Kris at this point has been given the role of "be as much of an antagonist as you can be without turning into an actual villain". I can say all I want about him having reasons to be like that (which in this case is "nothing" because those would be big spoilers nobody is ready to know yet), though none of them excuse the fact that yes, he is an arse to Nessa and she didn't deserve that.

At least your wish for Nessa's first romantic interest has been fulfilled. It's not Kris - this time
(Oh no! Does that mean he'll eventually fall in love with Nessa and she'll forgive all his arseholeness and they'll walk hand in hand towards the sunset, get married and have 15 children??)
(Place your bets...)

Why the sudden change to plural nouns and verb forms when talking about Lóránt? Are you sneaking in a clue of some sort?

Lóránt uses "they" pronouns because they're non-binary - that is, their gender identity is neither male of female. "They" as a singular pronoun has been a thing since Shakespeare, apparently, and nowadays a lot of people use it for themselves.

So it's only a clue for their gender identity... Lóránt is still one single person. With huge wings that are about as big as another person, but still one single being. ;)

I hope that helps!
