A Fairy Out of Her Tale - Dear Diary - 48. Scene 48

In which Nessa gets married...???

20th January 1995

Dear Diary of Overly Imaginative Dreams,

Were you expecting this to be more research notes from my time in the library?

So was I.

But yesterday I never got to the library, so I couldn't do the research, and so couldn't do the notes.

And why did I never get to the library, you ask?

Because as soon as I sat foot in the office, I realised that the TV and the couch and my dear Fairy Fun Greenhouse game were feeling really lonely sitting there by themselves with nobody to play with. So instead of spending the day doing research, I spent the day getting another 3 levels in the game. I'm sure it was time just as well-spent. Right?

Hey, don't judge me! I can feel the disapproving vibes rising from your pages.

So what if I would rather play games than spend the day reading? I'm 16, life is too short to spend it with my nose buried in books!

(Also Unn seems to not be getting better... Lóránt was with her the whole day yesterday and they seem more tired and stressed than usual. They even apologised to me for the delay in starting my language lessons. I told them I understand and I don't mind, though it was mostly because it means I can play more games.)

But anyway, the reason I'm writing now, too early on a Friday morning for anyone's liking, is because I had this dream I want to share. I want to write it down before the details slip away. It was one of those really vivid dreams that made me believe it was real up until the moment I woke up in my bed.

Though now that I wrote a bunch of other stuff first, I think some of those details are already gone...

Now, hold on... I can just see it again:

Me and Lydia in Floresfada. Not mum's house but... my own? It feels like it is. Mine and Lydia's, actually. All the outside walls are painted baby pink, we got flowers arround every pathway, and our garden has the green exuberance of summer. It's sunny too. Really sunny.

Our friends are there too, or at least my old friends. Though Lóránt's wings were hard to miss in the crowd, and I think I heard Unn complaining that the uneven paving made her spill a lot of water from her tank. And mum was there, and Morumpi (alive and kicking, even in the literal sense), and my brother, and mum's lovers, and Morumpi's lovers, and even my dad (I wonder if he had lovers?).

And you know why all these people were there?

Because Lydia and I were getting married!

I know, right? Married!

By the end of the ceremony, we had become Nessa and Lydia Cerejeira. The tree we chose to bless our family and lend us its name was, of course, the cerejeira, with its pink flowers in full bloom. Though Lydia said the cerejeira was called something else in her language and she wanted to have that be her new name. I don't remember what the word was, but even if I did it probably wasn't anything like the actual word in dwarf language, anyway. It was something like... cher... cherre... cherra... Cherry? Cherry tree? Something weird like that.

I wonder if Daisen has cerejeiras. It doesn't seem to have any kind of tree, which makes me wonder how people here get married if they can't have their household protected and named after anything. Do shape-shifters even get married? And dwarves? I don't think trees grow inside mountains either.

And now you made me want to go to the library research marriage ceremonies! Why do you do this to me?

I'll be back soon, and I may or may not decide to write something about cross-cultural marriage practices. It'll be either that, or a detailed description of level 40 of Fairy Fun Greenhouse. I'm sure you'll be thrilled by either!

Thanks for reading!
I hope it was somewhat clear that the Cerejeira Nessa was talking about is a cherry tree (that's what happens when you have your character technically use a language that is similar to Portuguese, and the dwarf character be the one whose language resembles English). When fairies marry, they pick a tree in their land that is particularly big and strong, and name their new family after that tree (so all people getting married potentially change names) in hopes that the tree will protect and bless them.
I had a slight miscalculation on the number of scenes I would need to post before Tuesday, so tomorrow you'll get another new scene, and then another one on Tuesday too. Then we'll be back to the usual schedule.
And if you have $1/month to spare, my Patreon is happy to provide a safe place to keep it for you... ;)

Great chapter in the continuing saga of Nessa and why she was thrown out of the fairy world. It seems like she's easily distracted by things that aren't important to what she has going on, like the video game. It sounds like any teenager in the world today, they'd rather play video games instead of doing homework for school or at times not even their chores around the house. I hope she gets the research done that she started reading on, before going off on something else. I really hope Unn gets better soon it seems like she's worse off than originally thought to be, I think she deserves to suffer some because she knows she's not supposed to eat ice cream and this time she over did it. Lorant is looking down from trying to take care of Unn and not taking care of herself. I love the story and can't wait to read the next chapter.

I don't know if it's only teenagers who would rather have fun than do boring chores. To be honest, it seems like the logical choice to me... :P

(The difference being that teenagers can actually get away with not doing their responsibilities for a while...)
