A Man in a Room, and other poems - 26. obscure

.

Poem No. 71

Beauty is its own worst enemy

because it lives only for itself,

and thus can be only vulnerable.

It stands in contrast

to the squalor of the Earth,

not the planet, but what we have done to it.

Poem No. 72

I wonder what name I'll have

great, poor or none at all.

Poem No. 73

As sleepiness crept through my head,

A gentle memory of you floated by.

Like a winter of happiness, it easily fed

On the grayness of days gone by.

Mako

Poem No. 74

The sublime merely hides the obvious,

and the obvious only obscures the sublime:

The way pleasure pretends to be happiness.

Chapter Comments

Four jewels, four crystalline drops of dew in the dawn shine here. I’ll start with 72, which speaks to my own heart and thinking. You voiced thoughts I have had forever. 71 is particularly apt for Earth Day yesterday. What have we done? The ugliness we impose on the Earth has too few enemies. 74 deepens my thoughts on happiness and peace, compared to pleasure. I love this, and may quote it for my classroom door. 73 made me smile and shudder: smile, for gentle memories and happy winters I have known; shudder, for the long winter just passed and the grey that lingers yet.

Thank you.

Each of these is small, yet they hold immense power. The scream messages that everyone should hear.

74. my head is not in a good place and i laughed out loud when i read this. Pleasure is not happiness. People give up marriages, and family, the only things that truly matter in the world, in pursuit of pleasure. Whether it be sex, or gold ... they will give up love for it.

73. i dont know why really but this made me sad

72. you have the name you made ... to many of us it is great. you are loved by many xo

71. human beings do not deserve what we have. like everything they do they will figure that out on the last day. once they have killed the planet, each other, every rhino, elephant, tiger ... they will decide then, too late, perhaps they should have not only cared about pleasure.

Thank you.

Thank you, Parker my friend, for a great set of comments. I respond to your thoughts concerning winter. I hope all is getting warmer now.

Thanks again for your feedback. These are person poems, and not always the easiest to share. Muah

Thank you, Tim. I know at some points in my life I've mused whether or not the Earth was trying to extinguish the human experiment. Certain things pop up now and then and still make me wonder. Maybe she's just waiting for the next, inevitable Chicxulub event to take the burden away for her ;)

Thanks again.
