A Man in a Room, and other poems - 8. dreams that don't fit anymore

Poem No. 16

If when all is good and well in the world,

humans are around and armed,

it won't stay that way for long.

Poem No. 17

She made himself what she thought he could be

then left himself to her empty dreams.

He cried because he didn’t fit into them anymore.

Poem No. 18

A reference point

is what everybody needs

it doesn't have to be a landmark

as long as you know where it is.

A Friend

Note: Another proto-Ross poem…?

Number 16 is as true as any mathematical axiom. It is definitional, but better spoken. Number 17 left me breathless, as it spoke so very deeply to me. This set of lines tells a story I know altogether too well. And as for number 18, well, I only wish I'd been the recipient, so many years ago.

16. A nice little observational poem.
18. This is nice. Friends as a landmark, a visual anchor. Wonderful.
17. I put this last because this one fascinates me, and if I’m honest I can’t settle it in my head. I think it’s the use of the word himself. I mean you could have used the word ‘him’. I’ve read it a few times, well lots of times and I think I could read it a million more and it will still fascinate me.
All great examples of you exploring poetry and your world.

Thank you, Tim. I will confess to being puzzled by No. 17 when I came to type it up recently. I think it's intended to make one puzzle and be a bit of a chameleon poem, changing colors as the moods do.

Thanks again for your comments and wonderful support of my work :)
