Translation Trashbin - 7. Mahler’s Second Symphony

...more words for music; follow the video link below....

A birthday present for @Mikiesboy with love. I know you have trouble with the glaube part...we all do, but sometimes it's the only comfort out there for us.

Performance translation of

Mahler’s Second Symphony

texts: Traditional Folk Song; Gottlieb Klopstock; Gustav Mahler

Fourth Movement

text: after a song from the anthology, Des Knaben Wunderhorn

[55:20] O Röschen rot!

[56:30] Der Mensch liegt in größter Not!

Fifth Movement

text: first eighteen lines after Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock;

remainder of text by Gustav Mahler

[1:23:40] Aufersteh'n, ja auferstehen wirst du,

Staub, Nach kurzer Ruh'!

Unsterblich Leben! Unsterblich Leben

wird der dich rief dir geben!

[1:27:29] Wieder aufzublüh'n wirst du gesät!

Der Herr der Ernte geht

und sammelt Garben

uns ein, die starben!

[1:31:19] O glaube, mein Herz, o glaube:

Es geht dir nichts verloren!

Dein ist, ja dein, was du gesehnt!

Dein, was du geliebt,

Was du gestritten!

[1:32:20] O glaube

Du wardst nicht umsonst geboren!

Hast nicht umsonst gelebt, gelitten!

[1:32:55] Was entstanden ist

Das muss vergehen!

Was vergangen, auferstehen!

Hör' auf zu beben!

[1:34:23] Bereite dich zu leben!

[1:34:58] O Schmerz! Du Alldurchdringer!

Dir bin ich entrungen!

O Tod! Du Allbezwinger!

Nun bist du bezwungen!

Mit Flügeln, die ich mir errungen,

In heißem Liebesstreben,

Werd' ich entschweben

Zum Licht, zu dem kein Aug' gedrungen!

Mit Flügeln, die ich mir errungen,

werde ich entschweben!

Mit Flügeln, die ich mir errungen,

werde ich entschweben!

Sterben werd' ich, um zu leben!

Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n

wirst du, mein Herz, in einem Nu!

Was du geschlagen

zu Gott wird es dich tragen!

-------------------------------------------------------

Fourth Movement

[55:20] Oh, blood-red rose.

[56:30] The people wait in dire need;

The people lie and always bleed;

But ever would I in heaven be (but ever would I in heaven be).

[58:35] Once a different path was shown to me

Guarded by one angel who would have turned me back around.

But no, I would not be turned back around (I would not be turned back around).

I am of God, and in him find repose,

The God of love (the God of love), the spark of light in my soul,

The one whom the light in me will for-ever extol.

.

Fifth Movement

[1:23:40] Resurrect; then resurrect your quest,

Ashes, laid down to rest –

"Undying being!" "Undying being!"

The one who calls you is thus forgiving.

Rise again because of his sowing (rise again because of his sowing);

The lord of the Earth (the lord of the Earth) tending,

Like the sheaves' harvest,

Binds us to his breast.

[1:31:19] Oh, take heart. Believe. Oh, take heart:

None will be lost to you!

Yours is (yours), what's yours; what you wanted!

Yours that you held dear;

That for which you fought.

[1:32:20] Oh, take heart,

You're not born hopeless, it's true!

Nor is hopeless the pain you're granted!

[1:32:55] Things simply appear

To be lifeless when,

All that dies will finally resurrect!

Thus live not in fear (thus live not in fear).

[1:34:23] Prepare to then (prepare to then) live again!

[1:34:58] Oh, pain, you are all-piercing!

From you I am wrested!

Oh, death, you all-conquering –

At last you are bested!

With wings I've made, I will be soaring.

In burning love attested,

And that light exploring

Which no human eye has ingested!

With wings I've made, I will be soaring,

And in that light exploring!

With wings I've made, I will be soaring,

And in that light exploring!

It's death I must go through to live (it's death I must go through to live)!

Resurrect; then resurrect –

It's you, belief, in all you give.

That pain carried through (that pain carried through, that pain carried through)

Shall God (shall God, shall God) take from you!

Thanks to @Lyssa for encouraging me and helping with the German images in the 18th century poems (which by the way contrast sharply to Mahler's flamboyant yours and '!'s). Also large thanks go to @Steve3 for posting the Dudamel performance over on Dead-Composers.

Thank you, JP. Time is right. I start these things with real fear. Somehow, an initial spark comes to me and I can proceed - but it's always one line, one word at a time. Thanks for your comments here and elsewhere. I appreciate your feedback a great deal.
