Jeremy spots David as he comes out of an ice cream shop and calls to him.  It seems that Jeremy recognizes David from middle school, but David is having trouble placing him.  As they're talking about different things, like starting high school in the fall, a storm whips up.  Since David wouldn't be able to make it home in time, Jeremy invites him to come to his house, which is closer.  What happens when they get there, if anything?  You'll have to read this charming short story to find out. 

Response from the author:

Wow! It's been almost 20 years since I wrote this story. Originally, it was in response to a GA anthology short story prompt, 'The Rainy Day'. A second anthology prompt, 'Back to School', I think on Codey's World led to a second story involving these two characters. There were other anthology prompts that followed as well as other stories in the series, and additional characters were introduced.

The result of all of this was my favorite form of writing, the short story series. Broad Ripple Blues was meant to be a one-off, but I liked the characters too much to let them go. I also like the flexibility of writing short stories in which a story arc concludes fully within a limited timeframe. The short story series provides an opportunity to develop characters and watch them grow without the commitment to writing a full novel, which offers its own challenges. I've since written several novels and novellas, including Legacy, the sequel to the Naptown Tales Series. I've also started and will soon conclude the New York Stories series.

However, it was this story, Broad Ripple Blues, that started it all.
