Euphoria and Other Poems - 4. Chapter 4

III

The trumpets have been sounded

The game is on the vigilance of

The mice and the cunning cats

Playing shared rooms in the heads

Of complacent fools who trust

In peace and continuity of

Generations after generations

Of guileless truth unbarred

Unhinged from reality they fight

Over old dusty tomes devoid of

Humanity’s creed-less dread

Chapter Comments

This poem has me thinking of centuries of scholastics arguing fruitless points from texts that had very little basis in reality. And yet, these were powerful minds in their day. What are we to say about our own times, when we allow similar philosophers the same sort of sway today? Your poem reminds us to question. Thank you.
