My Poems, Satires & Other Lyrical Nonsense - 7. Four Young Lives

You, Me & Them my first paid piece, which stand at 27 thousand words is out now on Patreon. The story will be coming to kindle mid-Septemeber. Be on the lookout for it. Sign up to my mailing list where I will be giving three free ebooks of the story. The story revolves around two 16-17 year-old-boys, on the evening of the 4th of July.

Two continuous beams flood onward.
A car full of boisterous teenagers converses loudly amongst each other.
The interior heat is flushed warm to the occupant’s cheeks.
Four young lives with so much to live for dangle in limbo.

One girl who got accepted for a doctorate in medicine will leave next week for university.
A boy who crushes on the smart girl will be utterly gutted when the girl he has fallen crazily in love get away.
Another girl is feeling guilty for mocking a young artsy girl in the hallway that morning.
The driver is saddened by his latest break-up.
Yet, beneath it all, they shroud their emotion and party hard to forget.

The small car wavers in and out between the divider lines.
The melodic tunes thump from the speakers; drowning out the conversation in the back seat.
Three of the four will not be wearing seatbelts.
The car takes a gradual bend in the road.
From the backseat comes a question.
The driver swivels his head.
A gruff shout comes from the passenger seat.
A deer darts across merrily in front of the dense beams.

The driver swerves… don’t hit the deer he’d retort.
The alcohol clutched in a hand will let loose; clocking an unsuspecting victim in the head.
The driver tries to regain control. Sadly, he does not.
A tree draws closer; the lights augment; followed by a crash.

Four young lives were placed in danger that day.
Three young lives perished on that day.
Two young lives died in agony.
One young life remains to tell the brunt.

***

I chose to tell this little piece of flash-fiction which was inspired by the unusual rate of road accidents surging in Ireland over the last month or so. A large proportion of them young. It is such a sad occurrence to understand that such young lives are taken in tragic circumstances. Stay safe for anyone who drives, and never be reckless when on the road as it can not only endanger you but others.

More to come, stick around. Comments are welcome :)

You, Me & Them Synopsis:

Its the fourth of July, sweltering heat, patties on the grill, fun, and laughter to be had with close-ones. All is well for sixteen-year-old Taylor, who has a crush on his best friend. Every summer, the families get together to celebrate by lake Chebacco. Only this 4th of July, Jackson, Taylors best friend has a secret of his own. As the endless day of wonder, dips into the cool evening, will Jackson and Taylor speak of their rattled nerves for each other? Perhaps make their own Fourth of July fireworks.

It is so sad to think that your short story holds so much truth in it and yet it just simply is not heard by many young people. I think one of the problems is, a passenger of sixteen years is moved from the roll of a passenger into the drivers seat. Driving is a 100 percent activity. You have to give it your full attention. Whether it is alcohol, weed, or even an emotional state, due to a break up, if you can not give driving your full attention then you should not be on the road.  Your story is sad but true. Lack of driving experience, an over correction and a car is thrown out of control and only something like a tree or a rock wall can bring it to rest with deviststing results to the unsecured occupants inside. Newton’s laws of motion do not care how old you are. The seat belts do help more often than not.  Sorry to hear Ireland is having a rash of road deaths. 😢

Yes, driving does require a great deal of focus. If you do not have the attentiveness to remain vigilant I don't think you should be on the road. Everyone is sharing the road; the very best you can do is try to take others who are sharing it into consideration. In Ireland, we have many twisty and winding roads. For tourists who come to Ireland, they often note who we seem to drive on their ass or their tailgating in America. It is common here, and since we are a speedy bunch people get going to places without the holdups. If you cause a buildup, you'll be surprised or forced off the road by intimidation. However, one of the downside of hour speediness and windy roads are teenagers who are not long on the road driving at the same speeds experienced drivers are going at. Of course, this leads to more deaths than anything. However, my partner has been driving since he was eleven and he zooms around the countryside. Although he cracks up being stuck at traffic lights in Dublin lol.
