Finally, a winter walk where I wasn't just worried about survival. :) 

Cozy Contemplations

 

 

Peace

 

 

A mid-February walk

So different from yesterday’s

Astonishing, and welcomed

 

Warmer temperatures

Have chased snow from the road’s edge

Uncovering life amongst the death

 

Green beneath the browns and golds

Evidence of sustenance

For those who need it

 

Mice, deer, rabbits—sustenance themselves

Animals who must eke out an existence

Or perish in the harshness of winter

 

As I walk, it is a reminder

Of the cycle we’re all a part of

Mother Nature looks after her own

 

I can picture hooves… paws… claws

Digging for this tender treasure

Hidden beneath brown-speckled snow

 

I find myself buoyed by the gray skies

That in days past seemed bleak and lifeless

Seeing new beauty in their dreariness

 

And of the fog in the near distance

For within them is the sun and her strength

Her glow suffused as she hibernates

 

Her power lessened, but not gone

Biding time as pocked snow melts

And feeds the arteries beneath my feet

 

Yes, today’s small recedence

Is a reminder of what is to come again

So easy to forget in the extremes of winter

 

Maybe not tomorrow or next week

But renewed life is on the horizon

And its promise is in the air

 

I end my walk, full of the earth’s energy

And as I reenter my empty home

I am at peace

I think this is one of your best poems, Gary.  I was with you for every step of your walk.  You nailed the change in seasons and the fickleness of Mother Nature.  Well done.  :hug:

Thanks, Val. I looked around with fresh eyes today. A little warmth will do that. :)  . I see a lot of beauty in winter, but I've had enough. Yesterday, and the day before and the day before... I just wanted to get a walk in and get home and out of the cold. Today, I looked around, and some of my heaviness lifted. I really needed that. :heart:

As much as I now dislike cold thanks to arthritis pains, you remind me that it will end, and is a necessary part of life for the renewal of both the land and our hearts.  I envy those people who live in climes that never feel the bite of Winter teeth or the glare of snow, but how much they are missing basking in their near endless sun and warmth! 

 

Like the old Joni Mitchell song, 'You don't know what you've got until it's gone...'  I'll keep my Paradise of variety and forego the parking lots of sameness.  :)

God, I hate the cold now. Even when I'm in my warm house I can feel it in my old bones. :(  Like you, though, I don't think I'd be happy going south for the winter. I appreciate the spring too much when it finally arrives... it reminds me I still have much to do on this earth. :)  I love that song. Thanks, my friend. xoxoxo  :heart:

Oh, that would be so nice! No flowers around here yet, Def, but they will come, and I will soon be firing up my lawn tractor... and polishing my tree pruners. :P Thanks for commenting... :hug:

I don't think we have any flowers yet since it's only with the last few days that our snow is gone...it'll likely be back.  I had my house mate plant two peonies and a hosta in front of my porch in early November, so they may be good this year.  I wish I could get out and do my own gardening, but roses are too tough for me now with the new vision problem. 

I've only seen purple or white crocuses, but pink sure sounds nice!

I have about twenty hostas, and they all need to be divided... I have my work cut out for me. :)

I had two hostas in front of my porch I got from the neighbor shortly after I bought my house, and I had a kid do weeding about ten years back, and he managed to remove everything including the good plants.  I was pissed to say the least.  The two peonies are Sarah Bernhart and Jules ely, the hosta is Rainbow's End...no clue what that hosta will look like since it was a free bonus plant.  :)

I don't know the proper names for mine, but most of them are the white edged and yellow edged... also the really deep green ones... I think they are called emerald something... and elephant ears (the huge leaves).

Beautiful. A reminder to me that change is inevitable like the seasons . Survival possible with perseverance .

Thanks, deville! It was a reaffirming walk in a winter I've found little joy in. Sometimes we need to take a look around us, and see the bigger picture. We're part of something wonderful, that ebbs and flows... but always renews. Life... all life... is about perseverance. :)  Cheers... Gary....
