Dirty Pool

   (6 reviews)
Sub-genres: Drama, General Romance

Duncan never saw it coming... any of it. His friends didn't understand. They meant well, but it was over, and there was no going back. He wouldn't be fooled again.

It's tough when all your dreams collapse. You don't want to look back, yet you can't move forward. It's a horrible place to be.

When I first read this story I didn’t know what the term ‘Dirty Pool’ meant. I had to rely on google and the urban dictionary. After that, I understood the title a lot better.

What the friends do for the couple is sweet in a way but also a bit daring. I could have so easily backfired on them.

In this case, it is the right thing. Again, like others of Gary’s story, this highlights the importance of communication within relationships. If you don’t talk about what is going wrong, then it can’t be fixed.

Another intriguing read from a great author.

This story is a little masterpiece. I’ve already known that @Headstall is genius in writing dialogues and (mis)communication topics but idea to put something that might be a multi-chapter story in one conversation is fantastic. Locked in room by friends, two separated lovers try to make a conversation and resolve issues that separated them. Starting with borders which seems to be unbreakable, story evolves so that you, as a reader, are going through the same feelings (anger, disappointment, doubts, questionings and revelation at the end) as protagonists.

I love series, but bringing complete potential series in one chapter dialogue is work of art.

Response from the author:

Thanks, Cane! You're right that this could have easily been a multi-chapter story, but writing for the anthology requires condensing stories to an acceptable length. I've learned a lot from the process of doing such, and I absolutely love this story. The characters all came alive for me so easily, and I truly appreciate when someone new finds this story. This is only the fourth review it's received after all this time, but it could bring new readers to the story, and for that I am thankful. Cheers!

I think I was right about the title could have been NO EXIT:yes: The dialogue was Gary perfect and oh my God the description ! So much Gary Magic!

Response from the author:

Yeah, that title definitely would have fit. :)  I wrote this entire story in my head on a 30+ kilometer bike ride, conversations and all. When I got home I wrote feverishly until I got it all down. Like all my writing, I learned a lot from that experience. Thanks for your kind and encouraging support, Albert. Hopefully this review will stir new interest in this. Cheers!

Going through a breakup can be hard enough when there's an underlying reason, such as cheating, but when it's based on misinterpretation, a 3rd party with his own agenda, or a lack of communication, it can be devastating.  This story is about a bad breakup and how the parties deal with it afterward.

@Headstall uses powerful writing to display the emotions involved on both sides, and you'll feel like you're one of their friends witnessing the aftermath.  Take time to read this moving and heartfelt short story - you'll be glad you did.

Response from the author:

Thanks, Bill! There's a lot going on in this short anthology story, and it is one I am very proud of. It's so nice to get another review for this story, and I hope readers listen to your recommendation. Cheers!

Gary writes some great novels, but not as well know are his short story gems.  Dirty Pool is a realistic and compelling story of the power of friends, the need for communication and trust in a relationship.  It has a happy and feel good ending.  This story can be read as a great way to just feel better, or as a sampler of @Headstall's stories and awesome skills as a writer.  I highly recommend this story, as well as others by Headstall.

Response from the author:

You are very kind to say such nice things, Terry. I truly appreciate the support for this story and my other works. Reviews can have a positive impact on readers looking for something new to read. This one should help. :)  Cheers!

A great story of miscommunication and lack of communication where a relationship is given another chance by friends who take a big risk. If you think you are at risk of becoming emotional remember to keep the Kleenex handy, maybe buy an extra box. A recommended ten-star read.

Response from the author:

Ten stars? Awesome! :D  I adore this story, and can relate to the characters very well. I have a Kelly in my life. :)  Thanks so much for reading and reviewing. I hope this story garners some new interest. It's been buried for years, but I think it deserves some new readers. Cheers, my friend.
