Free Verse. I didn't use the scenes presented. This was waiting to come out.

Headstall’s Poetry Prompts

 

 

Loyalty

 

 

 

Loyalty—such a twin-edged sword

Fulfilling… joyful satisfaction to give

But—eviscerating when not reflected

 

I give freely, gladly… you take greedily—like it needs no earning

You massage your ego with my devotion, and

Stroke yourself to heights of self-love

 

Did it ever enter your mind, I might be waiting

Or do you relish the imbalance—thrive on it—feed from it?

Is there underlying resentment that I am a better friend than you?

 

My loyalty is not to be taken lightly—it is not bottomless

There are no degrees of it—it is or it isn’t—it will not lessen

But it can stop growing—and die an irreversible death

 

Does it irritate—that my depths are real and honest, and

Do you know that I will see through, and tire of you?

Are you incapable—uncaring—or just stupid?

Sometimes, I deviate from the plan.

Beautifully heart-wrenching.

 

I'm reminded of every betrayal I've ever suffered, and brought back to my most sacred personal edict, what I call the Rogue's Code, but which many know as The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you".

 

I abide by this code as well as I can, and it means that I go into friendships, relationships, everything I can expecting to get back what I put in. No more. No less. Sometimes, there are those who take advantage, willing to show you the other edge of the sword, and it's heartbreaking when they do.

 

But we live and we learn. All we can do is persevere and hope the betrayal doesn't break us. As long as we retain our own humanity, and remember that there are those worthy of our love and loyalty, we have won in the end, for we have something that our betrayers do not.

 

Integrity.

Man, Gary. That's a clear message. A little frightening in some ways but it's honest. You can't expect all things all the time without giving back.
Great poem Gary. Word choice is excellent.

Wow, Cynus. Great review. You get it. You're right. we do live and we learn. It amazes me that people don't realize others will figure them out, given time. I am very perceptive, always have been... I can sniff out a lie or a falseness easily, but I always give people room when I can. But eventually, the chances run out. Holding out hope is fine if it does no damage, but once it starts to be a constant negative, it's time to let go. It's a reality that we all think we're smarter than we really are... if we're not real, we fool no one... at least not for long. Thanks for a perfect review, buddy... Integrity... Cheers... Gary...

Thanks, tim. This is one of those that poured out without much thought, but lots of feeling. Whether friendship, relationship, family... whatever... it has to be a 'two way street', or it's not real. Thanks for the comment on word choice. Honesty is sometimes a curse... didn't mean it to be frightening... but I am who I am. Thanks for the great review... Cheers... Gary...

It's an unfortunate happenstance when someone so good and so right gets tangled up by someone who is self absorbed and lives blindly in a Me, Me, Me world.
If only there was radar alerts for such things...

Thanks, Reader. There are givers and there are takers in this world. I'm glad I'm not one of the latter. My problem is I don't throw people away when I know I should. I've had people I've had to walk away from because the imbalance became unbearable, or they did things that I couldn't forgive. I put a lot into friendships, so betrayal can really be devastating sometimes. Your poem really expressed that well. Some people should come with warning labels...

I don't like people who play games. I can overlook some, for a while, but when it is compounded by someone thinking they're smarter than they are, and they need not give back... only take, or withhold out of spite, then I start shutting down. I feel if someone takes real friendship for granted, they lack something, or they're stupid. I think we all have been let down by supposed friends... thanks for getting it, and thanks for the review... cheers... Gary...

Love results Mostly as Pain. No one is perfect when it comes to Love and Life. That is why we often seen the betrayal from who we truly Love.
