Stepping Through the Mirror

   (4 reviews)
Genres: Romance
Sub-genres: General Romance

Blake has a wish. He wants someone for himself. Someone who sees him... really sees him. Living his life in the background was understandable; at least he'd forever told himself so. But, he was changing. His entire family was living their fairy tale lives. Didn't he deserve a chance to do the same?

The theme for this story is Living in the Shadows, but it is also my take on a modern day Fairy Tale.

I am usually not a big fan of short stories, but for some very special authors I make an exception here and there.

This was one of those, and it turned out to be a very good decision. We get a glimpse of Blake’s every day life, which isn’t bad in any way, he just has to live in some very big shadows. Right after that glimpse, we have the chance to follow him on a very special evening. At least a very special evening for him. That sadly doesn’t mean his family sees it the same way, for them, there are more important things they have to attend to. But maybe Blake will finally get what he deserves: someone who sees him.

Thank you Gary for this very sweet story. Your ability to make characters come alive, to turn emotions and the inner workings of your protagonists into words and to make the reader feel is amazing, as always.

Response from the author:

Thank you, Pascal! I love getting reviews because they help attract attention to the story... but more than that they inspire me to always strive to do better. Short stories don't often get reviews, and that seems a shame to me. So thank you again for your kind and encouraging words about this story and my writing. Blake is a character I rooted for. He quietly broke my heart with how stoically unresentful he was... how he loved his siblings and his family, but didn't let himself be buried. His stepping through the mirror was a heroic act in my opinion. Cheers!

Stepping through the Mirror is a perfect read to end the day. It tells the story of Blake Sorenson, who has to find his own way in the shadow of two highly successful and charming siblings. It is a heart-warming story that made me smile for Blake and the journey ahead, which I suspect will be a happy one.

A great read.

Response from the author:

This was the perfect day to receive a review on this, Doha. Thank you! I never thought I would click with short stories, but I do. The require a far different approach from writing an epic or multi chapter story, but they can be just as rewarding. In Canada, we have a lot of 'hockey parents', and this was the inspiration for Blake, and how he was often invisible to his family. I loved writing his journey, and giving him a voice. This was a very productive anthology for me, with me penning three different stories totaling over 30,000 words. It means a lot when this gets any attention, so again, I thank you, and hope others will read your review and give this a read. Cheers! Gary....

Having not one but two super star siblings is rough on their younger brother.  Blake feels like he is hidden in their shadows though the three siblings love each other very much.  Finding recognition for his own talent and someone to focus their attention on him would be like "Stepping Through the Mirror" into a bright and beautiful new world.  You'll have to read this sparkling gem in order to find out what happens.  Happy Reading!

Response from the author:

Thank you so much raven1! I truly appreciate you recommending this story. It is a feel good story that I often return to, and I hope new readers will heed your advice. Cheers!

The joy of being the odd one out, even to your family.

I really felt for Blake, his mum comes across as an airhead, and his father as only interested in 'manly' sports. I can't blame Blake for his reaction to Ryan at first.

I'm glad when Blake finally gets his head out of his...um...bottom...and looks at what is right in front of him.

A great Short.
