A Fairy Out of Her Tale - Dear Diary - 1. Scene 01

Nessa just committed the worst possible crime for a fairy: she killed someone.
Why? How?
It only goes downhill from here.
Some mild gory descriptions.

1st January 1995

I killed my step-father.

Me, a fairy, guardian of all living things, just took away a life.

My punishment: our Mother Deity stripped me of my wings, my power, my right to be a fairy. Nothing I don't deserve.

And I have one hour to disappear. Where to, I don't know. I just can’t be with other fairies anymore - I’ll taint them.

I'm now sitting on my bed with this diary on my lap and my body hunched over it because I can't see my own handwriting. It's hard to understand those scrabbles when my hand shakes so much and tears mess up the ink. But I can't stop writing.

I'm wasting the time I should use to pack my things. I should be taking one last look at the bedroom where I grew up, and where until minutes ago the body of a man who had taken care of me for twelve years lay with a broken neck and bulging empty eyes. My life as the the High Priestess's first born started and ended here. I should be sucking up everything about this place to burn it in my memory.

Instead, my eyes are glued to this page. The words pour from my pen. Harshly, panicked. Torn. I've lost my right to talk to other fairies, so now this is all I have.

You are my confidant. My new best friend. My only way to understand my own feelings when my world is falling apart and I...

I want to cry on mum's lap, have her tell me everything is going to be fine and kiss my forehead. I want the safety of her embrace. Her soothing words of reassurance.

Of hope.

But I'll never see her again.

My time is almost up. I don't know where I'm going or what to take with me. I have to wander through the forest until I leave Floresfada, our fairy land. When I get to the other side... I don't even know what is in there. At the moment I'm not even sure I'll get that far. Particularly if I don't put this diary down right now and start packing useful survival things.

I'll go in a moment.

Oh Mother Deity of all fairies and our nature, please hear the last plea of a former humble servant no longer worthy of your compassion.

Please watch over my mother and brother, the family that is left after my unforgivable act, and give them the strength to rebuild their lives.

Please spare them from the shame of sharing their blood with a killer. They did nothing wrong. It was all my fault.

I'm not ready, but I must go.

Thanks for reading!

This week the chapters will go up on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, but from next week onwards the posting schedule will be Tue-Fri-Sun instead.
I hope you enjoyed this beginning of the story and stick with Nessa for the next bit. We'll learn more about what is going on soon enough.

If you go to my website (link on my profile), you'll see a series of posts on the building to the New Year about the story's worldbuilding and characters. Might be worth checking it out...

Fairys and mystical creatures are not usually my thing, however, i think this story would benefit from being told from the first person and from the exact moment the killing takes place. Jump-starting directly into the murder and the phycological thoughts of the fairy after she has committed this heinous act. Though I am curious as to how a story of this possible magnitude can unfold as a journal entry. Keep up the work :)

The story is beginning to take shape now, I hope you like the way it's going so far.

The good thing about diary entries is that the character can write their innermost thoughts and say things they wouldn't necessarily say to another person. The downside is that they need to be aware of their emotions as they write... or at least be aware of having confusing/conflicting thoughts. And they need to be ready to talk about whatever it is they're writing about. It's almost like a written therapy session. And it can mean that the character in question needs a bit of distancing before they can tell details of their most traumatic experiences.

And because this is the first comment for the story, you get a special picture of Nessa celebrating Christmas:

Awhh... she's adorable. Oh and yes diary entries are a great medium for storytelling personal experiences. I guess I just never heard of a such a story being told like this before because it usually told in either first or third person. Not that it is a problem, I love trying out new formats. I wish you all the best with the idea, and I'll drop by to see how the series is going in my free time :) That's a good idea in itself, like a therapy session format, I recall reading a book a while back ago called Starstruck and it had vague entries about a psychiatrist.

Aw, thanks. Nessa thinks she's adorable too, so thanks for reaffirming her beliefs (and you made a friend for life with that comment, just saying...)
This format is a new experience for me too. The closest I got to something like this before was with my story The Orchestra - it's told by the two main characters in alternating chapters, each with their own writing style that is supposed to change gradually as they develop and change too. Creating writing styles that reflected their personalities and changed with them made writing them a much more personal experience than just writing a "simpler" first person perspective in a way. But a diary entry - there's so much more to consider, including the physical aspect of "where I am as I write this" and "when is a reasonable time in my life to write this". That said, I'm loving it. It's a lot of fun having to think about this kind of thing as well as the plot and other story-telling things.

Fun fact: my mother was a counsellor (she's now a nun - long story), so I grew up with the therapy stuff. I joke that I have a honorary degree in counselling because of all the conferences I went to as a kid/teen.

Interested to see where this goes. While there are bad fairies, not the norm. Curious to know why she killed her stepfather.

Thanks for the comment!

Fairies and people come in all alignments. Bad fairies, good fairies, cruel fairies, saint fairies...

And if you stick around until next week (scene 17) you'll see Nessa finally spilling the beans about what happened between her and her step-father. Maybe then you can let me know if you think the build-up to it was properly compensated.

Personally like being dropped in at the deep end...it's the most mysterious part of the pool...you can swim out, or dive down. Interesting.

That's definitely an interesting way to put it. :)

I hope you enjoy finding out whether Nessa is going to swim out or drown in this one.

I find Nessa's diary entries a very intriguing method for an author to present a story. It gives him the ability to see inside the head of his principal character. Something that is lacking in the normal dialog or exposition method of writing.

Good start and I am looking forward to following along with this tale for a while, just to see what develops.

Thanks!

Part of the reason I wrote the story as diary entries is to give myself that extra challenge of how to tell the story with those limitations. I hope you keep following along to see how it develops!
