Shade of Reality - 1. Poem

Shades of Reality

by kevduenas

I can't remember

It's all just so blurry

A victim of time,

As it will continue to be.

Diminishing and fading,

As time passes on.

If only I could reverse it,

The flow of time,

I could remember.

Things would become

As they once were,

And yet why spend time

Wishing for that

That will never happen?

Shapes and figures,

Once clear-cut and clean,

Now morphed

Distorted beyond recognition

And those shapes

That once eluded me

I now recognize

For what they truly are.

Everything has changed,

Including me.

I too am affected.

The question:

What shape am I to take now?

Black and white.

Once two distinct entities,

Now have become one.

The thin, narrow line

That once separated the two
has long since disappeared.

They have mixed,

Turned everything into shades of gray.

The thing about gray,

No matter how much white

I try to put back in

It will always remain gray.

The same can be said about black.

No matter how much you darken things,

There is still that light

And once there

That light will never extinguish

Memories, like paintings,

Erode over time into oblivion

And no matter how much restoration is done

They will never quite be the same.

Memories, also like paintings,

Come in more than one variety

There are the good and the bad,

The beautiful and the ugly,

The happy and the sad,

The ones you want to keep forever,

And the ones that you want to banish into oblivion.

Eventually all will cease to exist.

Until then, we must wait.

We must choose what to remember,

And what to forget.
