HMS Belvidera 4. Bridgemont

   (5 reviews)

It's 1795, and George Granger is promoted to Post Captain and takes command of a troubled frigate.

Before reading this story, consider:
1. It contains graphic descriptions of sex.
2. British money was denominated in either Guineas or Pounds. A Guinea was worth about 25-30 shillings, while a Pound was worth about 20 shillings. If coins are used, the reference is in Guineas, otherwise it is in Pounds. A guinea is worth approximately $300 US dollars in 2009, which means a shilling was worth approximately $10.
3. The characters in this story are fictional with the exception of some well-known historical figures. The involvement of those characters is fictional.
4. The story is written with modern day language, as opposed to that used in 18th century England.

This is the fourth time I've read this series.  It's just as fresh as it was the first time!  Oh, and I'm in love with George!

At just over a quarter-million words with 44 chapters, Belvidera is the fourth book in the Bridgemont series in which George Granger  and his frigate perform heroic service for the crown.  I've just finished re-reading it and it is even better the second time around.  I have heartily recommended this series and this book is a particularly good one if you love naval strategy and stories!   Read and enjoy!

As a young man one of my favourite TV shows was Victory At Sea. Although set 150 years before that, the Bridgemont series of books is a great fictional tale that reminds me of that show.  Mark Arbour has done a lot of research to include historical facts and events of the era authentically written.  This shows in the dialogue and descriptions of ships at battle, as well as the politics and attitudes of the times.  The HMS Belvidera is a very gripping story well worth the time spent to read it.

This is the fourth book in the Bridgemont saga.  I found this book more adventure story than any other.  The writing and pacing were both first rate and the continued character development is superb.  The battles seemed to dominate this book for me.  There were some excellent action elsewhere but the battles really draws the reader in.  You truly feel the spray of water on your face,  the smell of the gunpowder, and the cry of the injured and dying.  Mark has a remarkable facility to draw one into the action...

Enjoyed every aspect of this book, and for those that have read the first three books in this saga; you will simply find more of the brilliance in this one.
