Musings of a Messed Up Mind - 10. Depression

Just a poem about depression

Depression

Depression seeks the low road,
it wants to take you there.
To places filled with sadness,
and terrible despair.

This road isn’t a lonely place,
as many souls will know.
Many of us walk it, when
there’s nowhere else to go.

There are walls along this byway;
very tall and very straight.
Just we keep on walking,
seems there’s no escape.

There is a light ahead,
for some of us it seems.
We stumble through the darkness,
until the hope - it gleams.

Thanks to all of you for your support and kindnesses..

Hey Tim

As always, you have a beautiful way with words.

Thank you 1810. Just having a bad day. I'm prone. Writing it out, helps.

Thanks for your support.

The title of this poem is Depression, but in the end it's about hope and getting to that light at the end of the tunnel. Beautiful.

Hi LitLover. Depression is difficult. For me hiding it doesn't help. Writing something, talking always help. And I try to remember, for me, there is usually a way out.

Thank you for your support and kind review.

Tim, like Lit, the end is so uplifting. It stands in stark contrast with the beginning :)

This is another beautiful poem, the way you use imagery to convey depression and hope is breathtaking

Hi Drew. Thank you. I appreciate your review. It's easy to forget there is always hope but there is.

Thanks again for reading.

I recognize myself in these words, I know this path, we both travel. You've expressed it so very well.

I've read this poem over and over again. I know this so well. I love how the poem is a journey about depression being a journey. The only word for the way you end it is a word I never use... sublime. In the late sixties/early seventies, one of the answers to depression was shock treatments. My mom had it done two separate times, and it was a scary time for all of us... but in the end, she conquered it... kicked its ass to kingdom come, no thanks to the shock treatments. I see my mom in this poem, and the ending is hers. Any time I feel down, like really down, I think of how she fought. Thanks for this, tim... it is a thing of beauty... you too, are a light that gleams... cheers... Gary...

Gary .. had to take a few minutes before I could reply. Your comments are so touching. I'm so happy your mum made it through. I know about the shock treatment, that's frightening. I'm mostly okay, but sometimes like today, it sneaks up on me. I'm glad this touched you ... i said in the poem it's not a lonely road and just look here.. it's not. So many people suffer. Thanks for reading and your great review.

Tim - this is an expressive and insistent description of depression. The image of a tunnel, a chute from which one can't escape, is perfect. I love how the meter drives you unstoppably into the experience. Thank you for this insight and this poem.

Thank you Parker. Yeah I've suffered for a few years. Last few years have been better. But it was a bad day when I wrote Depression. Thanks for all off your support.

This is another beautiful poem, Tim. I am particularly struck by the high walls analogy, for that's how depression feels to me personally too.

It's beautifully well done, but also makes me sad to think of you having dark moments. Let's hope our 'high walled' road lead to the bright sands of a beach and fresh air.

AC, thank you. Seems many of us have dark moments. I dont have them as often but they sneak up on me now. Things change in seconds. I think there is hope, we just need to fight it until we get what we want. Thank you AC. for your support and for encouraging my writing.
