timmy's poetry - 62. On Wings - a poem for Remembrance Day 2017

A poem for Remembrance Day – Saturday November 11, 2017 – Lest We Forget

On Wings

Pure white – they stand and wait for me

Until I am safely across the sea

To carry my prayers, winged horses abide

I climb the Mount in feet, bare

I bleed no longer; I do not care.

Long ago I died, though not in vain

Wounds festered, but I felt no pain.

I was proud to be a soldier fair

A child I was here, but not over there.

I ran the gauntlet, until I died,

Machine gun fire; my mother cried.

Near now am I to the top,

My goal is close I dare not stop.

They fill us with hope we who have died

There they wait with wings wide spread;

To bear my soul to the land of the dead.

This was inspired by the sculptures at the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum in St. Louis. Four groups representing figures of Loyalty, Vision, Courage and Sacrifice by sculptor Walker Hancock stand, with their winged horses, on the north and south sides of the building. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldiers%27_Memorial

Much has already been said, so rather than just repeat any of the wonderful words that came before me, all I’m going to say is:

Nicely done, tim, nicely done... :)

A beautiful , impassioned and bold eulogy to fallen heroes, if only the world would take note and in remembering also learn.

Thank you very much deville. I wish too that we'd learn.

Beautiful and haunting. Soldiers fallen proudly and honorably served their countries. All soldiers should be honored and remembered for the sacrifices they and family endure.

Thanks jp.  AC showed me the winged horses ... they beautiful there are strong male and females beside each one and i decided to read about winged horses.. then i wrote the poem.

Soldiers should be honored, but the living ones need to be as well. We don't treat them very well...

This is beautiful, tim. Images stirred and voices recalled - you bring them to the front of our minds, that we may always remember. You impelled us to the mountaintop, line by line, step by step. Bravo.

thank you very much Parker.  Pleased to know that it touched you. xo
