  1. Did you catch Monday's blog featuring Comicfan's story, The Life of Seeon, as this month's Signature Feature? If not, go check it out and then download a copy of the graphic to share in your signature if you want to show your love for his story. If Monday's blog wasn't enough to move this story to the top of your TBR list, maybe today's excerpt will! Comicfan said: I picked it because it sets up the whole tale. Right from the start you know Seeon is seen as the lesser of the princes. The world he is used to, first two sons are important, then daughters so power can be gain by marriage. A third boy isn't needed and this excerpt shows that. To read more, check out the rest of the story here.
  2. This month we're changing it up a little and doing a feature for one of our Signature authors--and resident prompt guru--Comicfan. The story he chose to be featured was The Life of Seeon. Make sure you check it out (I bet those reviews will help you decide to read it sooner rather than later!) and then download the signature graphic below if you want to share you love for Comicfan's story. Length: 31,995 Description: Seeon Toleran is the fifth child of the ruling royal family. His life was one of study and devotion to his Gods. Then war came and the world Seeon knew ended. There were decisions that were made for him which drastically altered the direction of his life. Suddenly the world of the priesthood is gone as an option in Seeon's life. Instead he is made Ma' Nee. What will this mean to a youth who has known neither love nor choice? Will this end his world or open new vistas? Time will tell. Some Readers Said: If you want to spread the word about Comicfan's story, download the graphic below and add it to your signature! Make sure you come back on Wednesday to see the excerpt he chose to share!
  3. I hope you all enjoyed the last Improve & Encourage feature, because it's time for another one. These features are meant to both provide feedback to authors and, similar to story reviews, point out stories that readers might not otherwise have found. It's similar to a review, in that the person doing the critique tells you what they liked about the story, but it differs in that they also provide constructive criticism. Each author signed up to participate, and sign up's are still open! These will post once a month until we no longer have content. Once that happens, I will critique the last author that posted. If you'd like to provide a critique for the blog, sign up in the thread. I'm hoping to have a lot more authors sign up, and just remember, by signing up, you are also volunteering to have your story critiqued and featured. Hard Choices Comicfan Critique By: JayT Please give us a short summary of the story you chose. Sean, a twenty-five-year-old business owner, meets Will one day when Will hires Sean’s business for a job. The two become fast friends, with Will giving Sean thoughtful gifts in hopes of brightening his day. The morning after their first official date, Sean literally runs into Caesar and finds himself attracted him. Now Sean faces trying to choose between the two men. He knows this choice will affect his entire life; who will he choose? What do you see as the strengths of the story/poem? The story is well written and told all the way through, leaving the reader with no lingering questions. Comicfan did an amazing job of developing Will’s character, almost as if he wanted the reader to fall in love with Will. Although there was potential to tell more of this story, Comicfan kept it short, bringing the tale to completion in one chapter. What do you see as the weaknesses of the story/poem? Though they are few, there are some (maybe three or four) grammatical mistakes; common ones that I myself make often. The main weakness of this story is character development and growth. While Will’s character was developed nicely, the other characters hardly grew at all. We, as readers, know that Sean is attracted to both Will and Caesar, but he never lets on that he loves Caesar at all. It was almost like he was settling for Caesar because Will left. If Sean had said ‘I love you’ to Caesar, letting the reader know that it is true, the story would not have been as bitter. How do you think the story/poem could be improved? There will always be the “what if’s” of life, but we cannot linger on them and be happy where we are. If Sean had shown any other emotion besides hurt at the end, letting the reader know that he was happy and in love, the story would be greatly improved. What was your favorite part? (scene/sentence/etc) I think my favorite part of the story, although I say favorite reluctantly, is the breaking of the Pez Dispenser. This scene symbolizes the end of Sean and Will’s relationship, making it one of the most influential scenes of the story.
  4. Well happy May to everyone! Is it moderate and beautiful where you are? The year is moving faster and faster, but and we're approaching Pride month next month. Did you catch the feature call for the Premium short stories themed with coming out stories? It's something many gay authors face, no matter what orientation we claim (and can't that be interesting to explain?!) and it's no surprise it's often the subject of teen fiction as well. Let's take a look at another long-time favorite GA author's take on the subject with this month's CSR feature! The Strange Life of Jonas Marks by @comicfan Length: 57,189 Description: Jonas Marks has just graduated high school when he tells his father he is gay. The end result is that Jonas is tossed out of his home. With no money, no job, and no place to call home he ends up on his friend Jenny's couch till he starts working at Kroger's. Then his life just gets strange. A/N: This story originally began as a short story in the Anthology Walk on the Wild Side. I had a number of people comment on how it really needed to be expanded. The end result is what you are now looking at. For those who read and comment, this is for you. Thank you for your vote of confidence and I hope this lives up to what you expect of me. A Reader Said: What a surprise to suddenly find an epilogue here! It suits your story quite well. The story arc developed nicely and I like the end. I'm glad it's not a major cliffhanger but interestingly a sequel might be possible, who knows Anyway, thank you for this great story, I enjoyed it a lot. ~ Zenobia So enjoy this month's CSR selection, but don't forget to be ready to come back and share your thoughts and comment on the Discussion day on Monday, May 27th!
  5. Wow, it's the last CSR Discussion day of 2020! Hopefully everyone has had a great holiday season, and enjoyed the stories featured. I asked a few questions of the authors featured this month the same questions. Enjoy the answers I got back, then share any thoughts you had as you read their ficlets in a comment below! Mikiesboy with The Christmas Cracker How do you celebrate the Holidays? Usually we have a large reunion in early December with the whole family from around Toronto and Niagara Falls. Then we meet with Michael's parents, and his brother on Christmas Day. It's a pretty traditional Christmas. This year is Christmas under lock down. So, just me and my Husband and a zoom get together with everyone else. I'm cooking our traditional meal, only smaller for the pair of us. What is a favorite holiday memory you'd like to share? I don't really have a favourite memory. I look forward to Christmas annually. It always fills me with a sense of wonder and fellowship. Do you have a favourite line or scene in The Christmas Cracker. This part makes me hold my breath for a second, it's among my favourites: What is your favorite Holiday Story: Well my favourite is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. On GA my favourite is this wonderful, naughty version: Bill W with A Gay Christmas Carol How do you celebrate the holidays? This has changed over the years. When the kids were younger and we lived closer to our other relatives, we used to throw a big dinner on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and invite the entire extended family. Sometimes we'd be like the Currie family from The Castaway Hotel series and have up to 30 people at our house for those meals. Now that I'm older and many of those relatives have died and the kids live a long way away from me and each other, I merely chat with them using all of these marvelous new technologies. What is a favorite holiday memory you'd like to share? It's another idea I stole and used in The Castaway Hotel series. On Christmas Eve when the kids were younger, one of the adults would dress up in a Santa suit and then go outside to peek in the picture window so the kids could see him. We would rotate who played Santa so the kids wouldn't figure it out, and some of the women even took a turn doing this. After Santa appeared, we'd use that to urge the kids that they had to go to bed so Santa could leave his presents and this ended a lot of hassles about them wanting to stay up longer. Do you have a favorite line or scene in A Gay Christmas Carol? What is your favorite holiday story? Every Christmas I have to watch at least one version of A Christmas Carol or I don't feel right. My favorite is the 1951version staring Allistair Sims, but I also like the 1984 version with George C. Scott and the 1999 version staring Patrick Stuart. I also enjoy 1970 musical version, Scrooge, so I guess you can tell why I wrote A Gay Christmas Carol.
  6. That's right, this month we have a holiday triple feature! These Christmas stories are like sprinkles of joy you can use to brighten your day and hearts. Just the right length for a short read, please enjoy these stories brought to you from 2 of our Signature Authors and 1 of our Classic Authors. The Christmas Cracker by @Mikiesboy Length: 1,528 Description: Hawken picked up the red Christmas Cracker and offered the other end to Lori-Anne. She grasped it. They pulled. It snapped with a satisfying bang. Hawk carefully pulled out the contents. The others had received little gifts ... but his was different. He looked at Harish, who smiled ... A Reader said: This story was a sweet bit of Christmas magic. ~ dughlas Bear in Winter by @comicfan Length: 4,181 Description: William Watthews runs the local recreation center. Most people call him, Will or Bear, but it seems someone has other plans for him. Just what is going on at the rec center and what will it mean to Bear? A Reader said: I have to come back to like this, but I loved the story.. It was absolutely sweet and wonderful and full of heart. ~ Defiance19 A Gay Christmas Carol by @Bill W Length: 9,495 Description: Scrooge becomes a religious zealot named Franklin Phelps. He has some troubling beliefs about gays and on Christmas Eve he first encounters the spirit of his former associate, Patsy Falwell, followed by three ghosts that attempt to help him redefine his position, but will they succeed? A Reader said: lol well i like the « revised » gay xmas carol 😉 ~ Danilo Syrtis Don't forget to come back and share your thoughts on the CSR Discussion day, Monday, December 28th.
  7. Well, you get an extra dose of me this week, since it's a US holiday and I had some time to spare to help out with the blog this morning. Speaking of, thank you to any and every veteran who has ever served to protect the freedom and security of their country! And, without further ado... please enjoy Aditus' review of @comicfan's story, A Vampire to the Rescue! A Vampire to the Rescue Comicfan Reviewer: Aditus Status: Complete Word Count: 3,949 Halloween is over, and all the creepy folk are back behind the veil for one year with the help of fireworks and Jack-o’-lanterns. Except for one vampire. Him we still want around because he is a hero. Terry is out to get some food when he overhears a heated conversation between two men in a darkened street. Just when he is about to turn away, he hears something that reminds him of how cruel humanity can be to a child. How cruel it has been to him. This is why there is no way Terry will allow what is about to happen. While he is still considering what to do the argument turns into a fight, and one of the men kills the other. When the survivor pulls a frightened kid out of the trunk of a car, Terry sees his suspicions confirmed. He can’t wait any longer to intervene. An epic fight enfolds, and Terry finds out he’s battling an old enemy. In the end, Terry is still hungry, but the kid has the perfect idea of how they could change that. The story has some nice twists and surprises I really liked. There might be some parts where I want to know even more, but that’s because I’m greedy. And now I have that damn song in my head: Oh..someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah. 8. Well, how has May treated you? Are you ready for Pride next month? This month we had a great double feature of @comicfan's story, The Strange Life of Jonas Marks, which included Coming Out, some fun fantasy, a romance, and so much more!! Did you read Puppilull's review or enjoy the story yourself? I hope you did! First, of course, is my interview with Comicfan, then you can share your thoughts on his story in the comments below! Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point? I usually like to make the bed. My mother was always one to say, “Wayne, god forbid you leave your bedroom door open, you don’t want people to think you’re a slob.” If people look into my room they’ll never think I’m a slob, just a book whore. If you were an animal, what would you be? I’d say a dog. Faithful to one family/person, loved, sleep a lot, belly rubs, taken for walks, and get to bark at those you don’t like … I’d say that works for me What’s something personal about you people might be surprised to know? I have a collection of Smurfs. What’s the best part of being an author? All those crazy ideas in my head, I get to put down on paper, then type up, and share with other people. The incredible part is some people actually like my crazy ideas. If you could give advice to yourself when you first started writing, what would it be? Write and be fearless. Never be afraid to make mistakes. Things can be edited later, but if you don’t write you can’t share. No idea should be abandoned until you attempt it. But the best thing I could tell myself is to remember not every story will be a hit with everyone, so keep your head up and keep trying. Is fantasy your preferred genre to read and write? Fantasy has always been a mainstay in my reading. Fantasy can take many forms and I’ve always been a voracious reader. The nickname name Comicfan isn’t because of anything other than I love comics as well. From newspaper comics like Peanuts, Cathy, and Garfield, or comic books like Superman and Wonder Woman I read and loved them all. My mother got me hooked on mysteries and I have all of Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Horror author Stephen King is well represented as is Edgar Allen Poe. Then again you’ll find all of Kalayna Price’s Grave Witch series, Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and more, Rick Riordan, Patricia Briggs, and JK Rowling to name but a few. I admit to being a book whore. You posted a new chapter to The Strange Life of Jonas Marks after a long break. Did something reinspire you? Can you consider major surgery inspiration? I feared if something happened to me, Jonas and other stories that I’d had to put aside while dealing with life would never be completed. I focused on completing everything I had so readers would never have to wonder what happened. How did you decide what kind of fantasy characters to have come through the door in Jonas’s office? As I admit willingly to, I have always read a lot. I never go anywhere without a book. When the time came to choose characters I had to do little more than glance at my library. Hobbits? Check. Fairies? Check. Orcs, Dryads, and more? Check. If I felt there could be someone who wanted to date an angel, well then it was safe to bring one in, because the only who could see through the glamours was Jonas. Do you plan to write more in this setting, either for the other characters or Jonas? When I finish a story, for me that is usually goodbye to that world. However, some characters like to come back. I’ve learned to never say I won’t go back, but just don’t expect it to be any time soon. How about any other projects you would like to share with readers? Seeon has a new story. Couldn’t quite get it done for the spring anthology, but with just a few tweaks it will fit one of the fall topics. I am also trying to finish two short pieces for other projects on site as well as a longer one I’m calling Next Chapter. Hopefully, it all gets done.
  9. :wizard: Happy Birthday, Wayne! I hope you have an awesome day!!
  10. I have a few stories I have been working on but I figured if I didn't get something going besides the anthologies people were going to think I didn't do anything. Hence the story Life Changes. Inspired by the work being done by Renee Stevens who is putting out a chapter a week based off the prompts, I figured I could do that too, especially since I create the prompts. The story will mainly revolve around Ralph and his brother, Neil. Their lives will undergo some changes and they will have to figure out how to roll with the punches. I hope to keep everyone's interest so comments will help to know if I am close to the base or not. Each chapter will be fairly short, meaning between 800 to a 1000 words approximately. Let me know what you think.
