So, after nearly six months in the making, I have today submitted the first of a 20 chapter story for moderation. As editor, @Mikiesboy took me on a ride to do a proper job at writing, making me change my too many descriptions into things the characters say and expunge adverbs. The first chapter saw seven vastly different iterations. I cannot thank him enough for going through this patience and attention to detail. Having gotten the technical detail more or less right, @CassieQ whipped me into shape with "the feelings stick", making me point out stuff I thought was obvious and finding issues I hoped nobody would notice. Without her input, the story would be lacking. "Special Circumstances" is about a London police officer who falls in love with a police volunteer officer, called Special Constable in Britain. At the same time, he will be exposed to a secret that shakes the foundations of his world. Expect character growth, drama, boring police work, and action. I was a Special Constable, so the police stuff is genuine.

During these dark, short winter days, the possibility of ghosts rises to the surface. On a bright, warm, summer day, it's easy to put our fears aside, but on a foggy December afternoon, as the light fades, they rise out of the shadows. Our ancestors used to gather around their fires as the snow swirled outside and tell ghosts stories. Nowadays, we can just post them on the Internet. Here's my latest spooky offering: Bad Vibes - Shortly after moving in to new offices, Luke and his staff start to experience strange and seemingly inexplicable phenomenon. Could the old building be haunted? And if so, can anything be done to stop it? Read with the lights on.

I'll be starting to post a new story in a few weeks time. Here's a sample and a short synopsis. It wold be great to get some feedback at this stage. Terry Young has just been appointed as chief projectionist in a run-down old cinema. But from day one he has problems. Resentment from the man who thinks he should have got the job. An undeniable attraction toward his general manager, Dan. And the awakening of long-buried psychic abilities that indicate something is hidden under the building.

*Sneak Peek* The Holly & The Ivy (The King's Mate Series)
Aditus posted a topic in Peeks and Prompts
I'm revising aka almost re-writing one of my older stories. The posting will definitely start mid October. Prologue I hurry through the freezing cold to the heavy church doors. It smells like snow. The cast iron doorknob sucks the warmth from my hand, makes me wish for of a mug of mulled wine. Shit. The damn door doesn’t move one bit. I have to push with the force of my full bodyweight before the wooden contraption gives way. Promptly I hear an amused chuckle from behind. “What’s so funny?” “Nothing, love.” Nothing my ass. The warmth from the inside of the incense-smoky church hits me and I almost gag. I hate incense. There are only a few free seats left. When I feel a tug at my coat sleeve, I follow to our pew in the right aisle. I have a bad feeling. We shouldn’t have come here tonight. "We’re not late, a real Christmas Miracle," I grumble. He makes a noise between a grunt and a laugh. "We should have stayed home. I've had a bad feeling for days, but you insisted we come here. Losing our face... That's bullshit and you know it, but who ever listens to me?" I'm whining. I just should shut up. We sit down and I glance around the church. Nothing has changed since last year, or ten years before, or…: the large Christmas tree behind the altar, the choir getting ready for the opening song, most likely 'Oh Little Town of Bethlehem', the band retuning their instruments… “Somehow I expected that it would be different this year,” I mutter to myself. From the corner of my eye, I can see he is looking, probably with a lifted eyebrow. “Why would you think that?” Of course he heard that; superior hearing skill and all I guess. “Dunno… maybe because I am different?” “Well, you were right then.” Pleased with himself he leans back and crosses his long legs at the ankles. “Something has changed this year.” Smartass. I roll my eyes. That’s just so typical of him. Tipping my head back, I start counting the ceiling beams. I don’t know how often I’ve done this in the past years. It has always been oddly soothing, not tonight though. I shiver although the church is well heated and my stomach is churning with the little I ate. I can feel eyes on me. I need to get out of here. He grabs my hand and entwines our fingers. "It's okay Noël. Everything will be fine." I wish I had his confidence. There is a real chance that tomorrow the man beside me will be dead. Or I will. Or somebody could try... I stare at the Christmas tree behind the altar, its many lights get blurry, my mind slips back and I'm on the bus again, where my life took a turn. If for better or for worse has yet to be decided. So, what do you think? I know this isn't the right place to ask, but I still need a beta-reader...- 4 replies

I just published my first book The Reflection of Innocence Being a first time author, I found it to be trick to write, because of the sexuality of the character. I patterned many aspects of the main character against myself, and I am a gay man that never came to terms with my sexuality till my late 30's. So his sexuality was hidden away (except for a few passing references in the book), but here is my question. Since my book if I had to classify it is a Fiction-Thriller-Military genre (with some paranormal elements) it's appeal is mostly going to be straight men/women I imagined. My feeling was to try endear the readers to the character and essentially gloss over his sexuality (since his sexuality really isn't a major factor of the story anyway), and hope they can connect with the person, rather than just this facet of who he his. Later on when the character comes to terms with who he is as a person, and he finally accepts his sexuality (and being an alcolholic), I had hoped that the readers would feel close enough to the character so it really doesn't sway them. Again I base this on my own life where I was scared to death to do the 'big reveal' to family/friends, and when I did most just shrugged their shoulders, and said we like you for who you are, and your sexuality doesn't change that. . So I am hoping by trying to create that closeness with the characters with words, the readers feel the same way. Was just curious how others have dealt with writing books for markets geared for meat & potatoes middle America crowd, and showing that G&L go through the same struggles as they do? Thanks John

In multiple genres characters that have the ability to polymorph their bodies exist. What do you call them? Shapeshifters or Shapechangers?
