Sir Sean Connery has passed away today at the age of 90. Rest in Peace! I really liked him beareded in his later career. Both The Rock and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade he just shined.

The world lost a talented man today. Though I've read he hated the fame from this movie... I grew up watching this every year. And of course the joy of listening to his voice quoting Shakespeare dressed as a Klingon.

Jim Nabors was most famous for his role of Gomer Pyle, originally appearing on The Andy Griffith Show, but was so popular he was given his own show, the spinoff, Gomer Pyle USMC. Contrasting with the bumbling image and annoying speech patterns of that character, he had a rich baritone voice. He was also featured on every season premiere of the Carol Burnett Show. He hosted more than one variety show on TV and guest starred on others. He was good friends with Burt Reynolds who cast him in several of his movies. Since 1976, he had lived on Maui where he had a macadamia plantation. In the ‘70s, Jim Nabors and Rock Hudson were the victims of a homophobic rumor that spread far and wide. Supposedly they got married (at the time illegal everywhere in the US) and Rock Hudson would take the surname of Jim Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, and become “Rock Pyle”. It was said to be part of a joke party invitation. Both actors were definitely in The Closet at the time and never spoke to each other again. Jim Nabors was officially married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, in Seattle on January 15, 2013. He died in Honolulu on November 30, 2017 and was survived by his husband, Stan.

John Mahoney was best known for playing Martin Crane on Frazier. But he also had a significant role in The Brokenhearted Club as the Aloha Shirt wearing Gay mentor/restaurant owner. He appeared on ER as an elderly drag queen. too. I heard a rumor that John was Gay, but Wikipedia says, “Mahoney scarcely talked about his private life, but in a 2002 article he revealed he had been in several relationships, although he never married. He suffered from colon cancer in the mid-1980s.”

Russ Solomon founded Tower Records in Sacramento, California and expanded the company worldwide with stores across the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Mexico, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, among others. There was a San Francisco store in the Upper Market neighborhood, just a few blocks away from Castro Street. And a large store on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood. Tower Japan went independent in a management buyout four years before Tower went bankrupt in the US. Tower Japan still operates stores (85 in 2014). So if you’re really nostalgic… ;-) Tower Records had an uneven record as far as LGBTQ supportiveness is concerned. In May 1969, Tower Records’ giant location on Bay & Columbus was picketed for firing a suspected Gay employee. But many of the locations carried a lot of LGBTQ merchandise (including music, movies, and magazines). More suburban locations were not as supportive. From Wikipedia:

David Ogden Steirs was best known for his roles on M*A*S*H (Major Charles Emerson Winchester III) and The Dead Zone (Rev Gene Purly). He denied being interviewed for an article in which he supposedly Came Out, but did not dispute the claim itself. He was known to have been Gay, but even his Wikipedia page does not mention a marital status or sexual orientation.

If, like me, your first experience of ‘Bond, James Bond’ was Roger Moore, you will miss the longest serving Bond with seven films. (If you’re a Sean Connery fan, you’ll probably think his slightly smirking style was annoying – or worse.) Among his adversaries were Jaws, Christopher Walken’s Max Zorin, Christopher Lee’s Scaramanga, and Grace Jones’ May Day. On the soundtrack during this era were Paul McCartney & Wings (‘Live and Let Die’), Carly Simon (‘Nobody Does It Better’), Sheena Easton (‘For Your Eyes Only’), Rita Coolidge (‘All Time High’), and Duran Duran (‘A View to a Kill’). The Spy Who Loved Me featured a Lotus Esprit that turned into a submarine! (This was before they had the product placement agreement with BMW to feature Bond driving a German car instead of his traditional British motorcars.)

To many people, he might be best known for winning the Academy Award (Oscar) for directing The Silence of the Lambs, but to the LGBTQ community, he might be better known for directing Philadelphia (Tom Hanks won his first Best Actor Oscar – Demme also co-directed the music video for Bruce Springsteen’s Best Song Oscar-winning Streets of Philadelphia from the movie’s soundtrack). He was also politically active for Progressive and humanitarian causes.

Martin Landau was probably best known for his roles on the Mission Impossible and Space: 1999 TV series. In Mission Impossible, his character, Rollin Hand, was a master of disguises – something that many LGBTQs could probably identity with. Space: 1999 might have had high production values, but it was also kind of tacky.

Walter Becker died today. He was most famous for his collaborations with Donald Fagen as Steely Dan. No cause of death has been announced. Some of Steely Dan’s most famous songs are Reelin’ in the Years, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Peg, Deacon Blues, FM (No Static at All), and Hey Nineteen. Rikki Don’t Lose That Number was covered by Tom Robinson (as Ricky Don’t Lose That Number) on his major label release album, Hope and Glory.

Terrence McNally was survived by his husband, Tom Kirdahy (VT Civil Partnership 12/20/2003, DC marriage 4/6/2010, NY legal Marriage 6/26/2015). He had survived lung cancer, but died from complications of COVID-19. PBS’ American Masters presented Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life – I was able to see it at the Castro Theatre during Frameline42 (about a year before PBS showed it).

Rutger Hauer died less than a week after his 75th birthday ‘following an unspecified illness.’ He was known for such roles as Roy Batty (Blade Runner) and Etienne Navarre (Ladyhawke). He also established the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association, an AIDS awareness organization focusing on pregnant women and children. ‘All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.’

June Whitfield died on Friday. In the US, she was known for her role as Edina Monsoon’s sarcastic mother (and grandmother to Saffy) on Absolutely Fabulous. But in the UK, she had an extremely long list of credits in a very long career. ;–)
